The Mediterranean travel season has been growing for some time: Santorini wine tours happen in October, and some seasonal hotels in Saint-Tropez keep doors open through December. But perhaps the biggest indicator that vacations here no longer stop when we change the clocks back is the extension of cruise season to our favorite Med ports.
This means several things for travelers: fewer crowds, blessedly cooler temperatures, lower pricing across the board—but also the opportunity to get to know, say, Mykonos by going beyond its famed beaches and party-hearty summer nightlife to visit its archaeological museum and to hike in more comfortable temperatures. Ultra-luxury all-inclusive Regent Seven Seas Cruises will inaugurate its full-winter Mediterranean program this year—with pricing inclusive of excursions, food, beverages, and amenities like Wi-Fi. Its sister brand, longtime Readers' Choice winner Oceania Cruises, known for its destination-focused itineraries and exceptional onboard dining, plans to deploy the new Oceania Allura for its first complete offseason Mediterranean schedule next year. Holland America Line, for its part, is casting a wider net, with new winter voyages in the Med and across the waters of Northern Europe and the Canary Islands in 2027 (Windstar Cruises, which was early to the trend, has been operating off-season in the Mediterranean since 2023).
“The Caribbean used to be a winter destination, and now it's a year-round one,” says Nathan Hickman, Oceania Cruises' senior vice president and chief sales officer. “If you look at the weather patterns, why people go to Europe to see these sites, and the holiday markets that are out there, it makes sense to do it all year. And so far that's proving out.”
Of course, travelers will need to reframe expectations: In Bergen, Norway, they'll exchange kayaks for skis. (“I don't think I've ever planned a cruise that incorporated a ski vacation,” says Paul Grigsby, Holland America Line's vice president of deployment and revenue planning.) And in the Roman countryside, via the port of Civitavecchia, guests with Holland America Line can make the most of peak white-truffle season with a truffle-hunting and cooking excursion.
In fall 2027 there will be many pit stops at under-the-radar Christmas markets in Spain, France, and Italy with Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and northern lights pursuits in Norway with Holland America Line. And in January 2028 expect voyages between Barcelona and Rome with Oceania.
So far, cruisers seem enthusiastic about these trade-offs, with several lines already planning to roll out this expansion into future seasons. And for the most avid of travelers, it means getting to explore a beloved destination in an entirely new way.
