Sony has discontinued its last standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player in Japan, with the UBP-X700/K now listed as permanently out of stock. No successor has been announced, although the company continues to offer dedicated 4K Blu-ray players in international markets.
Sony appears to be withdrawing from the standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player market in its home country. The Japanese electronics giant has reportedly ended shipments of the UBP-X700/K, its last remaining dedicated 4K Blu-ray player in Japan. The development comes just months after Sony announced that it would discontinue its entire lineup of Blu-ray recorders, raising further questions about the company’s commitment to physical media.
The news comes from Japanese retailer and Sony enthusiast publication Kunkoku, which reports that shipments of the UBP-X700/K officially ended on October 22, 2026. Sony’s Japanese online storefront corroborates the development, listing the device as out of stock with no further restocking planned. No direct replacement or successor has been announced.
For those out of the loop, the UBP-X700/K is a relatively recent product, having launched in Japan on May 17, 2025. That said, it is essentially a streamlined version of the original UBP-X700, which debuted in 2018. Sony removed the older model’s built-in streaming applications, including YouTube, while retaining its core optical disc playback capabilities.
These include support for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, alongside Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio formats when connected to compatible equipment. The player was most recently listed in Japan for ¥58,300 and had been on the market for about 17 months before shipments ended.
The latest development follows several other moves away from optical media. Sony discontinued the production of recordable Blu-ray discs in February 2025, alongside other legacy recording formats. More recently, in February 2026, the company announced that it would gradually end shipments of all its Blu-ray recorders without introducing replacements.
For Japanese customers, this leaves the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive as Sony’s remaining option for playing 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movies. However, while the console supports HDR10 and high-quality surround sound formats, it lacks Dolby Vision support for disc playback, making it a less comprehensive alternative for some home theatre enthusiasts. Sony will also continue offering the BDP-S1700/K, although that model is limited to conventional Blu-ray discs and not 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray playback.
It is worth noting Sony has not formally announced a worldwide withdrawal from the 4K Blu-ray player market. Its American website continues to list the UBP-X700 and UBP-X800M2 for $259.99 and $329.99, respectively, although there’s a good chance Nevertheless, the development is another setback for physical media enthusiasts. As previously reported, the selection of new 4K Blu-ray players has been shrinking considerably, with few major manufacturers introducing replacement models.
