The Chicago Bears enter Sunday’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons at a crossroads. A loss on October 18 would be devastating. It would mean the team is sliding into a multi-game losing streak. While everyone wants to see Caleb Williams return to the quarterback spot, the real fight is happening on the edge of the line.
The defensive front is currently gutted. Per Bear Goggles On, the Bears will play without both Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo. This lack of depth forces a massive responsibility onto Austin Booker. He is currently leading the team with four sacks through five games. He needs to keep his hot streak alive to pressure Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
The Secondary Cannot Afford More Mistakes
The secondary is another massive problem area for Chicago. Jaylon Johnson is struggling through the worst start to his professional career. According to Bear Goggles On, Johnson has allowed a 118.6 passer rating and a 38.8 PFF coverage grade. That puts him ranked 97th out of 104 qualified cornerbacks. He has to stop Drake London to save his job.
London is a major threat. He currently sits fourth in the league with 488 receiving yards. If Johnson can’t shut him down, the entire defensive scheme falls apart. The Bears need big plays from Dillon Thieneman to help. Thieneman leads the team with 37 tackles and must step up in the box because T.J. Edwards is also out.
Pressure at the Center Is Vital
The interior of the line is also a concern for the Bears. Garrett Bradbury is in his first year with the team after replacing the retired Drew Dalman. His performance has been inconsistent. Through 212 pass-blocking snaps, Bradbury has allowed one sack and eight pressures. He must stay solid against Gervon Dexter.
Dexter is a dangerous force. Last year, he topped the Bears in sacks prior to being traded by the team. The Bears cannot let him disrupt the rhythm of the offense. If the Bears can’t win these specific battles, the season could slip away on Sunday.
