The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday arrested a bill collector of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) for demanding and accepting ₹40,000 as bribe from a city resident for fixation of property tax. The arrested was identified as Pradeep Kumar, who had been working as bill collector at CCMC’s North Zone office.
According to the DVAC, Santhosh, a resident of Coimbatore north, had applied for fixation of property tax in respect of house sites belonging to his clients. Bill collector Kumar demanded ₹50,000 as a bribe — ₹ 25,000 for each application. Later, the bribe amount was reduced to ₹ 40,000.
Unwilling to bribe the bill collector, Mr. Santhosh approached the DVAC, Coimbatore detachment, and lodged a complaint. The DVAC registered a case and laid a trap on Wednesday. The bill collector demanded and accepted ₹40,000 as bribe from the complainant and DVAC sleuths caught him in the act. He was arrested and sent to judicial remand.
