Natalie Bergman from Wild Belle has been carving out a solo career in the 2020s. My Home Is Not In This World, her album for Third Man Records last year, presented an immensely pleasant blend of retro pop, soul, and folk sounds. It bodes well for I Killed A North American Songbird, the new EP she announced today — as if that title alone was not enough to pique your interest.
The five-song project will be out in a couple weeks. Bergman is teasing it today with a video for "White Oak," the opening track. Produced by Ben Lumsdaine, it's a woozy, off-kilter soul ballad, a song where retro sounds are manipulated in thoroughly modern ways. "Alone in the wilderness/ You were born to make beautiful things," Bergman sings. "We laid his body in the ground/ You played the melody on baritone."
Andreas Ekelund directed the "White Oak" video, which stars dancers Staz Lindes, Sandi Denton, and June Tate. Watch below.
