Terence Crawford backs a clear winner in the Canelo Álvarez vs Christian Mbilli fight

Saúl Canelo Álvarez is preparing to return to the ring on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Mexican will face French-Cameroonian Christian Mbilli in a super middleweight bout that will mark his 69th professional appearance.

The fight comes more than a year after his last appearance, the one in which he lost the division titles to Terence Crawford by unanimous decision in September 2025.

Crawford sees it as a favorable fight for Canelo to prevail

Crawford, the man who took the belts from Canelo, knows the tapatío's style, strengths, and also weaknesses firsthand. The American, considered one of the best boxers of his generation and a champion in multiple divisions, has closely followed Álvarez's return and did not hesitate to offer a detailed analysis of what he expects to see in Saudi Arabia.

For “Bud,” Mbilli’s style is ideal for Canelo to win clearly. “Mbilli’s style is perfect and he won’t be able to do anything when Canelo applies pressure; I don’t see any chance for him to win,” Crawford said.

In his view, the Mexican’s constant pressure, his body work, and his experience in high-level fights will end up nullifying the undefeated Frenchman’s options and will leave an unquestionable result in Riyadh.

The context of the Canelo-Crawford rivalry

Canelo's defeat to Crawford remains his most recent official memory in the ring. That night in Las Vegas, the Nebraskan dominated the scorecards and took all the 168-pound titles.

Canelo has not made excuses about the result, although he has acknowledged on more than one occasion that he did not arrive in his best physical or mental condition. His trainer, Eddy Reynoso, was even more direct when asked about a possible rematch: “It would be against Terence Crawford, definitely”.

Since then, Canelo underwent elbow surgery, completed a long rehabilitation process, and set up a demanding training camp in Valencia, Spain, away from the usual bustle. The objective is clear: to show that he still has the level to compete among the elite of the super middleweight division and recover the ground he has lost.

Mbilli, the undefeated challenger

Christian Mbilli comes in with a solid record and the reputation of being an aggressive, pressure fighter with good knockout power. However, Crawford believes that precisely this style of constant forward pressure is what suits Canelo best, a boxer who has historically punished those who come at him and who knows how to manage distance and timing like few others.

The fight will take place under the promotion of Turki Alalshikh and will be part of a stacked card. On the same event, Jaime Munguía will fight defending his super middleweight crown, Rafael “Divino” Espinoza and Alan David “Rey” Picasso.

"Crawford, from a distance and with the authority of someone who has already defeated Canelo, painted a forceful scenario: the Mexican applying pressure, Mbilli with no clear answers, and a result that, according to his analysis, leaves no room for doubt. There is little time left for the Riyadh ring to confirm or disprove the current champion’s prediction.
