Bundesliga Matchday 5 delivered several unexpected results, including RB Leipzig’s emphatic 6-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder Bremen’s late comeback against Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg’s dramatic win over Schalke despite finishing with ten men.
Bayer Leverkusen also emerged victorious from a seven-goal encounter against Mainz, while Hamburg secured an important away win against Hoffenheim. With the Bundesliga title race and European positions already taking shape, several players produced performances that could prove important as the season progresses.
Here are five players who stood out across the weekend.
Christopher Nkunku – RB Leipzig
Christopher Nkunku produced the outstanding individual performance of Matchday 5 as RB Leipzig demolished Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0.
The France international scored a first-half hat-trick, finding the net in the fourth, 40th and 43rd minutes. Leipzig were already four goals ahead at the interval before Antonio Nusa and Tidiam Gomis added to Frankfurt’s misery.
For Martín Demichelis, the victory was an important statement following an inconsistent start to the campaign. Nkunku’s movement, finishing and ability to exploit defensive spaces demonstrated why he remains such a dangerous attacking player.
His hat-trick – Nkunku’s 49th, 50th and 51st goal in Leipzig colours across two spells – was also a reminder of how much the Saxony club can achieve when their attacking players perform at this level.
Niclas Füllkrug – Werder Bremen
Niclas Füllkrug’s return to Borussia Dortmund as a Werder Bremen player provided one of the weekend’s most memorable moments.
Dortmund appeared to be heading towards a fifth consecutive Bundesliga victory after establishing a 2-0 lead through Daniel Svensson and Nico Schlotterbeck. However, Bremen refused to surrender.
Ludovit Reis reduced the deficit before Füllkrug scored the equaliser to secure a remarkable 2-2 draw.
For a player whose move back to Bremen was surrounded by considerable emotion, scoring against his former club made the occasion particularly special. His goal also demonstrated why Daniel Thioune’s team needed an experienced striker capable of delivering in decisive moments.
Miro Muheim – Hamburg
Miro Muheim played a decisive role in Hamburg’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim, contributing a goal and an assist during the closing stages.
With Hamburg trailing 2-1, the Swiss defender delivered the cross that allowed Terem Moffi to equalise in the 83rd minute. He then completed the comeback with a superb first-time strike from outside the penalty area in stoppage time.
After losing their opening three Bundesliga matches, Hamburg have now recorded consecutive victories. Muheim’s attacking contribution demonstrated the importance of having defenders capable of influencing matches in the final third.
Anthony Caci – Mainz
Despite finishing on the losing side, Anthony Caci deserves recognition for his performance in Mainz’s entertaining 4-3 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen.
The French defender scored twice in the first half, helping Mainz recover from an early 2-0 deficit. His goals in the 33rd and 42nd minutes brought the hosts level before Leverkusen eventually regained control.
Although Mainz were unable to secure a positive result, Caci’s contribution highlighted how important attacking support from defensive positions can be. Scoring twice against an opponent of Leverkusen’s quality was an impressive individual achievement.
Keisuke Gotō – Freiburg
Keisuke Gotō emerged as Freiburg’s unlikely hero in their 2-1 victory against Schalke.
Julian Schuster’s side faced a difficult afternoon after Yuito Suzuki received a red card with the score level at 1-1. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Freiburg continued searching for a winner.
Gotō eventually delivered in the 85th minute, converting after combining with fellow substitute Vincenzo Grifo to secure all three points.
The victory extended Freiburg’s unbeaten start to five matches and moved them to the top of the Bundesliga with 13 points. For Gotō, scoring the decisive goal under such difficult circumstances made his contribution particularly memorable.
Matchday 5 provided another reminder that outstanding individual performances do not always come from the biggest names. Nkunku’s hat-trick dominated the headlines, but Füllkrug, Muheim, Caci and Gotō each produced decisive moments that shaped their respective matches.
