Google has updated its Google Health app to make automatic workout tracking more useful for Fitbit and Pixel Watch owners. Version 5.11 expands activity detection from 10 workout types to more than 100, helping users record exercise sessions even when they forget to start tracking manually.
The update is arriving for the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. Google's upcoming Fitbit Edge tracker will also receive the feature when it launches on October 27, 2026. The rollout is underway on Android and is already widely available on iOS.
More Workouts Can be Detected Automatically
The expanded system covers a wider range of activities, including strength training, swimming, golf, high-intensity workouts, cardio machines, racket sports and team sports. Previously, automatic detection supported only a limited selection of exercises. The expanded list should make the feature more useful for people who regularly switch between workout types.
According to Google, the updated system can deliver nearly twice as accurate activity detection and reduce missed workouts by more than half, based on its internal evaluations.
Google Health Uses More Than Movement Data
The update also changes how the app identifies a workout. Instead of relying only on movement and heart rate, Google Health considers additional context, including a user's exercise routines, historical activity records and previous manual corrections.
Location can also help the system identify activities, but users must grant the required permission. When a session meets the minimum duration requirement and includes a sustained elevated heart rate, the app can record it automatically. The default minimum duration is 15 minutes. Users typically receive a workout summary notification in Google Health within 30 minutes.
Confirming or editing a detected workout also helps the system learn individual activity patterns and improve future predictions.

How to Get the New Activity Tracking Feature
Users need Google Health version 5.11 and a compatible wearable to access the expanded detection feature. Since the Android rollout is still underway, the update may not appear for everyone immediately.
Once the feature reaches a device, users may see a screen introducing expanded activity detection when they open the app. The update is part of Google's broader effort to make its health platform more useful by reducing manual logging. For people who forget to start a workout on their watch, automatic detection could help keep their fitness records more complete.
