By Breaking Belize News Staff: An interdicted police officer accused of murdering his former mother-in-law and her twin brother in Hattieville Village in September 2025 has been committed to stand trial in the High Court.
Orvin Justin Williams, 26, appeared before a magistrate in Belize City on Wednesday, October 21, where his preliminary inquiry was completed through a paper committal procedure.
Williams faces two counts of murder in connection with the September 15, 2025 shooting deaths of 57-year-old Paula Belisle and her twin brother, Paul Esquillano, at a residence on Ysaguirre Boulevard in Hattieville.
During the proceedings, the police prosecutor submitted 16 witness statements and documentary exhibits forming part of the prosecution’s case. Following the hearing, the magistrate committed Williams to stand trial during the January 2027 session of the High Court, scheduled to begin January 18.
According to earlier police investigations, a gunman arrived at the residence in a vehicle shortly after 2 p.m., entered the property and opened fire on the siblings before fleeing.
Belisle, a domestic worker, died while being transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, while her brother was found dead inside the residence. Investigators recovered five expended 9mm shells and obtained surveillance footage showing a vehicle of interest leaving the area.
Police subsequently located the rental vehicle in Belize City. Williams was initially detained on October 1, 2025, but released two days later. He was rearrested on October 10 after investigators obtained additional evidence, including witness statements allegedly identifying him as the gunman.
The case has experienced several delays, with Williams previously receiving 201 pages of disclosure and 10 DVDs containing prosecution evidence.
Williams, who remains on interdiction from the Belize Police Department, was represented by attorney Gilroy Usher Jr. during Wednesday’s proceedings.
He remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison awaiting trial.
