The UK Government is to review drop-off charges at airports following an increase in fees at sites across the country.
The announcement comes after research by the RAC found that charges at 16 of the UK’s 20 busiest airports had risen since last summer.
Analysis showed that the average fee increased by a third to £7 compared to the same time last year.
Edinburgh Airport’s charge rose from £6 to £8.50, with Glasgow and Aberdeen now charging £7 – representing annual increases of £1 and £1.50, respectively.
The most expensive fees reported were at London’s Gatwick and Stansted airports, where drivers pay £10 to drop passengers off.
A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “The aviation minister has just this week committed to launch a review of drop-off charges at UK airports – because it is vital to ensure travel remains accessible and that passengers are treated fairly.
“In the meantime, we hope airports exercise restraint on rises, particularly where there are limited public transport alternatives.”
Rod Dennis, RAC senior policy officer, added: “This will be music to the ears of drivers, as we know airport drop-off charges are a growing source of anger and frustration.
“We’ve brought national attention to the issue by calling out these fees over many years, so are pleased they will now be scrutinised. “
