By Zoila Palma: The world produces enough food to feed everyone, yet an estimated 645 million people faced hunger in 2025, while nearly one in three people could not afford a healthy diet, UN Caribbean noted.
On World Food Day, observed on October 16, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is highlighting the role of innovation in addressing food insecurity and building sustainable food systems.
This year’s theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” emphasizes how science, technology and traditional knowledge can help improve food production and distribution. Innovations range from digital tools and improved seed varieties to farming practices and the knowledge of farmers, fishers and Indigenous communities.
The FAO noted that innovation can transform how food is produced, stored, transported and marketed. The organization stresses that combining scientific advances with local expertise can help make agrifood systems more stable, inclusive and resilient, while preventive measures can reduce risks before food crises occur.
The FAO also emphasizes that addressing global hunger requires collective action, investment and partnerships among governments, businesses, research institutions and communities.
