Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan on Monday said the corporation would soon take steps to free roads and footpaths under its jurisdiction from hawkers and make them more attractive for city dwellers.
“Within a short time, roads and footpaths under the Dhaka North City Corporation will be made free of hawkers on a daily basis, and aesthetically pleasing footpaths will be presented to city dwellers,” he said.
The DNCC administrator made the remarks while inaugurating the collection of information for the Family Card programme in Mirpur-13 under the Dhaka-15 constituency.
Describing the Family Card as a gift for the people, Shafiqul Islam Khan said the BNP had included the programme in its election manifesto and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had announced it for public welfare.
He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone within the party found engaging in irregularities in distributing Family Cards.
He stressed that assistance must reach eligible families without discrimination or political bias.
The administrator also said party nominations for the upcoming city corporation elections would be given to those who had worked for the people and demonstrated a commitment to public service.
He cited efforts to control dengue, improve waste management, maintain cleanliness and implement development and public service initiatives under the vision of a “Clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka” as examples of such work.
Those who failed to serve the public would not receive nominations, he added.
Shafiqul Islam Khan said 1,917 volunteers would be engaged in collecting and preserving information for the Family Card programme.
He also warned that strict action would be taken against members of any clandestine group found submitting false information or attempting to create confusion during the data collection process.
