WhatsApp is working on a new feature for iPhone users that could make opening shared links much more convenient. Instead of switching to Safari or another browser every time someone shares a website in a chat, users may soon be able to browse webpages directly within WhatsApp.
The upcoming functionality has been spotted in WhatsApp beta version 26.41.10.72 for iOS through Apple’s TestFlight program. According to WABetaInfo, the company is developing an improved in-app browser that would support regular web links, allowing users to move between conversations and webpages without constantly switching applications.
WhatsApp previously experimented with a similar feature for iPhone users in 2025. However, that version primarily supported eligible business links and came with technical restrictions, including HTTPS requirements. The new implementation aims to offer broader support for links shared through chats.
Users Will Have More Control Over How Links Open
One of the more useful aspects of the upcoming feature is that WhatsApp reportedly plans to make the in-app browser optional.
Users will be able to enable it through a dedicated setting within WhatsApp. When activated for the first time, the app will display an explanation informing users that supported links will open inside WhatsApp rather than their default browser.
Those who prefer Safari, Chrome, or another browser will still have the option to disable the feature. Users may also be able to open individual links externally through the three-dot menu.
This flexibility could be particularly useful for people who regularly receive news articles, shopping links, documents, and other web content through WhatsApp. Instead of repeatedly switching between applications, users could open a webpage, read its contents, and return to their conversation more conveniently.
WhatsApp Is Also Adding Browser Privacy Controls
Beyond convenience, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a dedicated option for clearing browsing data.
The feature would allow users to remove cookies and cached website data stored by WhatsApp’s in-app browser. This could be helpful for people who want greater control over the information websites save during browsing sessions.
According to WABetaInfo, browsing information is expected to be stored locally on the device. However, users should remember that opening links within an app does not automatically make every website safe or eliminate normal online tracking risks.
The feature remains under development, and there is currently no confirmed release date for all iPhone users.
If introduced more widely, the updated browser could make WhatsApp a more convenient place to access shared web content while allowing users to retain control over their preferred browsing experience.
