Seoul's Seodaemun District will spend 12.5 billion won ($8.7 million) through the first half of 2030 to plant 300,000 trees under an urban greening program.
The district aims to plant one tree for every resident, building a green network linking mountains, parks, streams and residential areas.
It will plant 50,000 trees along forest trails connecting Ansan and Goeunsan mountains, 48,000 in neighborhood parks and 62,000 along streets and waterways including the Hongjecheon and Bulgwangcheon streams.
Some 120,000 trees, or 40% of the total target, will be secured through land contributions from redevelopment and reconstruction projects and mandatory landscaping requirements.
Another 20,000 trees have been allocated to a resident participation program marking occasions such as births and marriages.
"We will make sure residents can find shade and woodland on the streets they walk every day and in the places where they rest," Seodaemun District Mayor Park Un-ki said.
