French authorities have indicated that overnight curfews could be imposed again in areas affected by violent protests, after restrictions helped restore calm in several cities.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said targeted curfews introduced in parts of Paris and other French cities had helped maintain order overnight following days of demonstrations that escalated into violence.
The measures give local authorities the option of imposing restrictions in areas where they consider them necessary. Lecornu said decisions on further curfews would be made according to conditions on the ground.
The restrictions followed unrest involving protests, looting and damage to property. Demonstrations have been linked to public anger over living costs, education funding and poor conditions in schools, with student groups among those involved in the wider movement.
Several cities have faced disruption as authorities attempt to contain the unrest. In some locations, restrictions have been introduced to limit movement during the night and reduce opportunities for further clashes or looting.

Although the curfews appeared to have eased tensions overnight, officials have warned that the situation remains uncertain. Further demonstrations are expected, and authorities may need to extend or repeat restrictions depending on developments.
The unrest has placed additional pressure on President Emmanuel Macron’s administration as France continues to face difficult political and economic challenges. The government must respond to public dissatisfaction while also managing security concerns and negotiations over national spending priorities.
The protests have also raised questions about how authorities should address grievances expressed by students and other demonstrators without allowing violence and property destruction to spread.
Curfews are among the immediate measures available to local officials, but they do not resolve the underlying issues driving public discontent. The government’s response will therefore be judged both by its ability to maintain public order and by whether it can address concerns over education and living standards.
Businesses affected by looting and disruption also face the prospect of further losses if demonstrations continue. Residents, meanwhile, must contend with restrictions that can affect movement and daily activities in areas under curfew.
The coming days are likely to determine whether the measures provide a lasting reduction in unrest or whether further restrictions and police operations will be required.
For now, French authorities are relying on local assessments to decide where additional curfews may be necessary, while preparing for the possibility of more demonstrations during the week.
