Fall is officially here, and with it comes a host of seasonal outdoor tasks like raking up leaves, washing down patio furniture, and taking care of general yard maintenance.
Concrete stains are notoriously hard to get rid of — not to mention unsightly. And if fall leaves have left dark stains on your concrete patio or driveway, you might be wondering how to remove them without damaging the stone. What’s more, the longer you leave them to pile up, the harder the stains will be to clean.
If, like me, you tend to rely on natural cleaning solutions for tough spots, I’ve recently learned that white vinegar is a no-no and should never be used on concrete.
So with that in mind, I asked the experts how to remove leaf stains on concrete without scratching it — and needing expensive repairs.
Why do leaves leave stains on concrete?
First of all, why do leaf stains appear on concrete? Since leaves are organic matter, once they sit on surfaces, they leave natural tannins or dyes.
Wet conditions during fall can cause these pigments to seep into the porous surface and bind to the concrete, leaving unsightly brown or dark discoloration.
What can I use to clean leaf stains on concrete?
So what’s the best way to tackle leaf stains without using harsh chemicals? Or if you don't own a pressure washer?
Concrete is porous so you’ll need to avoid highly acidic products such as white vinegar, which can penetrate the surface, causing long-term damage.
Fortunately, light surface stains can easily be removed with a specialized concrete cleaner or a mild neutral solution of dish soap and water.
“I would remove any leaves, organic matter, and debris before washing with a mild and concrete-compatible detergent and a soft nylon brush,” advises Isabella Flores, Cleaning Expert at Sparkly Maid San Diego. “Rinse well and repeat as needed.”
Another solution to deal with stubborn leaf stains is using hydrogen peroxide. Similar to bleach, hydrogen peroxide is known to easily tackle tough stains effectively. Perhaps the key difference is it’s non-toxic and fragrance-free.
“For leaf stains, use Hydrogen peroxide, 3-5% concentration. Spray or pour on the surface, let sit for 15 minutes, scrub with a stiff-bristled brush, and rinse with plenty of clean water,” adds Alex Varela, cleaning expert with Oakville Maids.
Be sure to test your cleaning solution on a small, hidden spot first to prevent surface damage or even making the stain worse. And always follow the product instructions, giving it the right time to work rather than frantically scrubbing harder.
As with all cleaning tasks, avoid mixing different types of products, as well as chemicals and other items around the home. And if in doubt, it’s best to contact a concrete specialist.

“Since concrete is porous, certain stains may seep below the surface and resist attempts to make an area blend in with the rest of a driveway, walkway, patio, or other concrete project,” advises Flores.
“In those cases, a concrete restoration professional may have other ideas for cleaning, resurfacing, or refinishing an area.”
Of course, keeping on top of clearing away leaves with a sturdy rake or a powerful leaf blower will help to minimize the risk of unsightly stains this fall — leaving you with less scrubbing work to do!
