The New York Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, marking another year under manager Aaron Boone and GM Brian Cashman in which the team failed to win a World Series. The team has not won the World Series since 2009 and, while they have made the playoffs in eight of nine seasons under Boone, they have been to just one World Series. Still, owner Hal Steinbrenner is backing Boone and Cashman, while blaming the players for the latest early exit.
Now, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal is saying maybe it was time for a change, speaking on Foul Territory.
“I understand the frustration of Yankees fans who are asking, ‘What are we doing? Why are we doing this over and over again when it’s the same ending every year?’ Hal Steinbrenner, the owner, put it on the players, blaming the hitters yesterday. Well, who picks the hitters? That’s Cashman. Who manages the hitters? That’s Boone,” Rosenthal said. “I don’t know. I don’t advocate, or I don’t like to advocate for people getting fired, but in this particular case, it just seemed like change was necessary, and it sure seemed like at some point, you can’t let the fans run the team, but their fans are so exasperated by what has happened in recent years, maybe their voice needs to be heard in a greater way than it has been.”

With the lack of a World Series title this year, the Yankees have tied their longest streak between World Series wins. The Yankees went from 1979 through 1995 without a title, 17 seasons. The current streak is from 2010 through 2026, another 17 seasons. Now, fans are getting tired of the same thing every season. Steinbrenner still says his goal is a World Series, but his actions are saying something different.
