The Western Regional Marine Police Command has confirmed that the seven fishermen who were reported missing on October 18, 2026 have been rescued in Benin waters and brought back home to the Western Region.
According to the police, the seven fishermen were rescued on October 21, 2026 at around 10:00 p.m. in Benin territorial waters by some local fishermen.
The names of the rescued fishermen have been given as Kofi Emmanuel, 32; Uncle Amoah, 45; Kwamena Nkum, 29; Kofi Aboagye, 36; Doboa, 35; Agya Badu, 42; and Kwamena Akyem, 40.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Western Regional Police Command and signed by its Head of Public Affairs Unit, Chief Supt Olivia Ewurabena Adiku.
The statement noted that coordination is ongoing between the Marine Police Command, Ghana Navy and their counterparts in Benin and Togo to facilitate the fishermen’s safe repatriation to Ghana.
Meanwhile, the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, earlier confirmed that efforts were underway to secure the safe return of the fishermen to the region.
The minister said authorities had established contact with the crew and were engaging their Togolese counterparts to facilitate their safe return to Ghana.
“I had a briefing that some contact has been established with the crew and that their location is within Benin waters,” the minister revealed.
He said, “So the Togo Navy has also been informed. Efforts are still underway to see how they can get them safely home.”
The Regional Minister noted that search and rescue operations began on Monday, October 19, following reports of the missing crew late on Sunday, October 18.
“Late Sunday evening, we had information about these missing persons. And so on Monday, the search and rescue operation commenced, and it’s been on till now,” he pointed out.
It would be recalled that the canoe’s owner, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the incident at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on Sunday, October 18.
Mr. Atta told police that the canoe departed the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on Friday, October 9, for a fishing expedition offshore Axim but had failed to return as expected.
Preliminary investigations indicated that repeated attempts to contact the seven crew members had been unsuccessful, raising concerns about their whereabouts.
A subsequent update suggested that the canoe might have suffered engine failure at sea, possibly causing it to drift from its intended fishing grounds towards Tema and the Volta Region.
