After a four-week working vacation in Europe, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria declaring himself “healthy, sound, and ready to go.” Beyond dismissing health rumours, his return signals a resumption of presidential engagements, strategic political consultations and economic diplomacy as the country approaches another demanding phase of governance.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s return to Nigeria after a four-week working vacation in Europe has brought renewed attention to his health, leadership and readiness to continue discharging the responsibilities of his office. Arriving in Lagos on Tuesday evening, the President was unequivocal in his response to questions about his wellbeing: “I’m here. Healthy, sound, and ready to go.”
It was a brief statement, but one delivered against a backdrop of public speculation about the President’s extended stay abroad and concerns expressed by some Nigerians and supporters over his health.
For Tinubu, the message was clear. He was back home, ready to resume his engagements and unwilling to allow political rumours to define the narrative surrounding his leadership.
“Ready to kick, ready to walk. There’s nothing wrong. Rumour will always be emanating from politics, but the facts remain: I’m here. Healthy, sound, and ready to go,” he told journalists upon arrival. The declaration has provided the central message of his return: reassurance, readiness and a determination to move forward.
Questions about the health of a sitting president are not unusual, particularly when an extended absence generates uncertainty. The presidency is an office with significant constitutional responsibilities, and citizens naturally want assurance that the person occupying it is able to perform those duties.
Tinubu’s four-week working vacation, which began with his departure from Abuja on August 30, attracted public attention partly because he remained abroad for an extended period. He spent the first week in London before travelling to France, where he stayed until his return to Nigeria.
His arrival in Lagos therefore offered an opportunity to address the speculation directly. Rather than allowing the conversation to be dominated by conjecture, the President responded in person and described himself as healthy, sound and ready to continue.
His remarks should be understood for what they were: a personal reassurance from the President about his condition. His statement does not, by itself, provide independent medical evidence, but it places his position clearly on the public record.
For a country facing substantial economic, social and security challenges, the more consequential question is how effectively the President resumes his duties and sustains the pace of governance. The president has strengthened public confidence through assurances, and visible engagement, transparent communication and the consistent performance of official responsibilities.
Tinubu’s arrival at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja at 6.22 p.m. was marked by a reception involving senior government officials and political leaders.
Among those present were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila and Special Adviser on Political Affairs Ibrahim Masari. A cultural troupe was also on hand to welcome him.
The President’s return was confirmed by his Special Assistant on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, who posted, “Landing. Welcome home, Mr President!”
The reception underscored the political significance of the President’s return, although the substance of his leadership will ultimately be measured by the decisions he takes and the results his administration delivers.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu chose to return first to Lagos to honour the memory of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, the winner of the June 1993 presidential election and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
The President is expected to attend the October 1 premiere of a movie honouring Abiola at the Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos. The planned engagement links his return with a commemoration of one of the most consequential episodes in the country’s democratic history.
An important feature of the President’s time in Europe was the series of reported engagements that accompanied his working vacation.
During his stay in Paris, Tinubu had a private dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron and met business leaders, including Vincent Bolloré of the Bolloré Group, whose interests include media and digital businesses.
These engagements suggest that the period abroad was not limited to personal rest. They formed part of the diplomatic and economic contacts reported by the Presidency during the President’s stay.
One notable development was his witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ogun State Government and DP World for the proposed Gateway deep seaport in Ogun Waterside and the creation of a Blue Marine Economic Zone.
According to the Presidency, DP World plans to invest $7 billion in the seaport and economic zone. If realised as envisaged, the proposed investment could have implications for maritime trade, logistics, employment and the wider regional economy. The memorandum and announced investment plan, however, should be distinguished from completed construction or investment already delivered.
The President also met with Femi Otedola, chairman of First Holdings, on Monday evening before departing Paris for Lagos.
Such contacts are relevant because economic diplomacy increasingly involves cultivating relationships with investors, businesses and international partners. The test will be whether discussions and agreements translate into bankable projects, actual capital deployment, jobs and measurable economic benefits. Tinubu’s return now brings the focus back to implementation at home.
The Presidency has indicated that the President will hold strategic meetings with political leaders and associates in Lagos over several days, including consultations relating to the 2027 elections.
This introduces a political dimension to his return. With the next general election approaching, consultations within political parties and among key stakeholders are likely to become more prominent.
Yet the President’s responsibilities extend beyond electoral calculations. Economic management, security, public welfare and the delivery of essential services remain central demands of the office. Political meetings will inevitably attract attention, but the public will also expect sustained engagement with the challenges confronting households, businesses and communities.
The balance between political coordination and governance will therefore be important. A president can pursue party consultations while continuing to direct the work of government, but the effectiveness of that arrangement must be judged by the continuity of decision-making and the results achieved.
Tinubu’s declaration that he is ready to go sets an expectation of renewed activity. Nigerians will reasonably look for that readiness to be reflected in the pace and quality of governance.
His reception in Lagos, the commemoration of MKO Abiola and anticipated meetings with political associates mark the beginning of the next phase of his engagements at home. His reported meetings with international political and business figures during his vacation also leave questions about investment opportunities and economic partnerships that will need to be followed through.
Ultimately, the significance of the President’s return will be determined less by the speculation it has ended than by the work that follows. Nigerians will look for continuity in governance, clarity in decision-making and measurable progress on the issues affecting their daily lives. For now, Tinubu has made his position clear. He has returned, dismissed concerns about his health and declared himself ready for the tasks ahead.
