My son begged me to move in — Then my daughter-in-law handed me a chore list

After three years of living alone, I finally let my son convince me that I belonged under his roof. It took less than 24 hours for me to understand that I hadn't been invited there for the reasons I thought.

The porch swing still creaked the way Mike used to complain about. I still hadn't oiled it because, honestly, that sound was the closest thing I had to company most mornings.

For three years, my husband had been gone. Three years of coffee in the same chipped mug, three years of the second chair at the kitchen table sitting empty, three years of me telling everyone I was doing just fine.

Jason tried to use his charm that evening.

I pulled the paper off the fridge and tapped it like a lawyer with evidence.

"Friday, six o'clock, dinner. I'm already booked, sweetheart."

"Yeah, you're booked with us."

"Nope. I'm booked with the schedule."

My son rubbed his forehead. I hummed and went back to folding a towel at exactly the pace of a woman who had all the time in the world.

Thursday at pickup, Juliet climbed into the back seat with her lunchbox and a worried little frown.

"Grandma? Mommy said a word about you on the phone. I'm not allowed to say it."

"I bet she was."

Friday dinner was at six o'clock sharp. And I was ready.

Friday night. Six o'clock sharp. I set down three plates of plain chicken, plain rice, and plain steamed broccoli. The kids were having pizza while watching cartoons in the living room.

Rebecca stared at her plate.

"Where's the seasoning, Linda?"

"This whole week has been ridiculous! You're acting like a child! Wednesday was the worst!"

"Yeah, Mom, you haven't been very helpful," Jason added.

I calmly folded my napkin.

"Funny you mention Wednesday, Rebecca. I was walking past the office when you were on the phone with your sister."

Her face lost a shade.

"Something about a kitchen remodel? And Cabo? Funded by my rent money and my free babysitting?"

Jason set his water glass down slowly.

"Cabo?" my son asked.

"She didn't tell you about Cabo, honey. Did she just tell you your mom was lonely?"

Rebecca started to speak. I raised a hand.

"You coached him for months, didn't you? All those calls. 'Mom, you belong with us.' He meant every word. You wrote every word on the list."

Jason looked at his wife as if he'd never quite seen her before.

My DIL didn't answer. That was the answer.

I reached into my purse and pulled out an envelope.

"New lease. Signed this afternoon. Rynel's staying another year. And this," I slid a receipt across the table, "is the deposit on a little condo two towns over. Cute yard. Extra bedroom for sleepovers."

"Mom, wait, please!"

"I love you, Jason. I do. But love isn't a chore chart on the fridge."

Juliet's eyes went wide. She and her brother had wandered in when they heard the commotion.

I knelt beside her and squeezed her small hand.

"Grandma's just moving to her own place, sweet pea. And Grandma will always, always answer the phone, and you'll visit all the time."

Lucas climbed into my lap, and I held him.

Then I stood, walked to my bedroom, where my suitcase had been waiting since noon, and rolled it out into the hallway and the cool evening air.

For the first time in three years, I wasn't leaving something behind.

I was heading somewhere of my own.
