I tested the Acer Swift Air 14 for 2 weeks — and it's the budget laptop I've been looking for

Acer is no stranger to delivering wallet-friendly laptops, but ever since RAMageddon kicked off, the budget laptop space has changed drastically. With the arrival of Apple's MacBook Neo and the Dell XPS 13 (2026), Acer had a different breed of affordable laptops to compete with. Its successful answer? The Acer Swift Air 14.

Boasting a compact, lightweight 14-inch design and taking advantage of Intel Wildcat Lake to offer solid performance for less, the Swift Air 14 is about as "premium" as it gets on a budget. But what really makes this low-cost laptop stand out from the pack isn't its cost, performance or design; this is the longest-lasting laptop I've used at this price point.

Not even one of our favorite affordable laptops for battery life, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x, can keep up with this machine, as the Swift Air 14 lasts close to 17 hours before needing a charge. Sorry, MacBook Neo and XPS 13; Acer's budget laptop handles power more efficiently.

While its battery is a clear highlight and it holds its own against its competition (it even comes with Thunderbolt 4 ports as standard), Acer had to make some sacrifices. That includes a somewhat flimsy keyboard with a lot of flex, a webcam I'd prefer not to use, and sticking with Wi-Fi 6E connectivity rather than Wi-Fi 7. Oh, and bloatware is very apparent.

While it may be among the best laptops for battery life we've tested, is it one of the best budget laptops to buy today? Read on for all of my thoughts.

Acer Swift Air 14 review: Cheat sheet

• What is it? A budget laptop with a slim, lightweight 13-inch design packing plenty of battery life.
• Who is it for? Students, families, remote professionals who frequently travel and anyone after an ultraportable on a budget
• What does it cost? The Acer Swift Air 14 costs a very modest $699 in the U.S. and £699 in the U.K. A model with an Intel Core 7 350 and 12GB of RAM is available for £1,049, but this appears to be limited to the U.K. for now.
• What do we like? The slim, lightweight build with a touch of style, solid general performance and its absolutely outstanding battery life — all for a wallet-friendly price.
• What don’t we like? The flex on the keyboard doesn't give me confidence in its sturdiness, its webcam makes me look like a grainy mess and it's hard to miss its bloatware.

Acer Swift Air 14 review: Specs

Acer Swift Air 14 review: The ups

The Acer Swift Air 14 already gets bonus points for being well under $1,000 / £1,000 at a time when machines are getting very expensive, but it also delivers the right perks where it counts.

Ultra-slim, ultra-fine

The Acer Swift Air 14 has more reason to use "Air" as its name than the MacBook Air, as this is a lightweight and portable laptop that easily slips into a backpack for traveling around. It helps that it comes in an attractive, sleek all-aluminum build and a sharp, CNC diamond-cut cover for that splash of premium style.

Coming in at 12.3 x 8.7 x 0.51 inches and weighing 2.6 pounds, the Swift Air 14 isn't the lightest or thinnest laptop around, considering the MacBook Neo is slightly slimmer at 0.5 inches and the Dell XPS 13 (2026) weighs a featherweight 2.2 pounds. But consider this: those are 13-inch laptops, whereas the Swift Air 14 is a 14-inch laptop while still being this light and compact in size. It's just as portable while still having the extra screen space — that's impressive.

Speaking of, the 14-inch FHD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS isn't groundbreaking, but it offers bright-enough visuals, smooth motion with its 120Hz refresh rate and clear details with decent, punchy colors. It's a step up from what you'd expect a budget laptop screen to offer, and it's great for watching shows and working in documents without your eyes straining. In fact, I used this to watch the latest Celebrity Traitors U.K., and I was still fully engaged with all the deception as ever. But don't expect a jaw-dropping cinematic experience here.

It's not as bright as the Dell XPS 13, with both laptops being far behind what the MacBook Neo brings to the table. Also to note, the Swift Air 14 doesn't support HDR, unlike its rivals. Still, at this price, and for the extra 14-inch screen size wrapped up in a solid, stylish design, the Swift Air 14 is a laptop I'd happily continue having in my backpack and take out no matter the setting.

Another big highlight? You're not confined to just two USB-C ports. The Swift Air 14 comes with two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a USB-A 3.2, along with a welcome 3.5mm headphone jack. So, speedy transfers, linking with a dock for monitor support and a spot to connect PC peripherals like a mouse or keyboard are all here. Hear that, MacBook Neo and Dell XPS 13?

I'm also surprised by its large touchpad not feeling like a flimsy afterthought, which is something I've experienced with many a budget laptop (like the Asus Chromebook CX15). It's smooth-feeling and snappy. I can't say the same about the keyboard, but more about that later.

Performance that works for most

The Acer Swift Air 14 comes equipped with an Intel Core 5 320 CPU, which is Intel's lower-end Wildcat Lake processor made to keep the cost down on budget laptops. You can get a configuration with an Intel Core 7 350, along with 12GB of RAM, but this will set you back over £1,000, according to the Acer store. To me, that defeats the purpose of this laptop despite the extra boost in power. We're reviewing the $699 / £699 model with a Core 5 320, 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and that's the configuration I'd go for.

I used the Acer Swift Air 14 to type up articles, browse the web, binge my way through shows and do some light photo editing work over the course of a few weeks, and not once did I feel like it couldn't keep up with my day-to-day tasks. I have a minimum of 15 Chrome tabs pinned to the browser at all times, and the Swift Air 14 could handle it with some YouTube playing in the background, too.

The Swift Air 14 comes with the exact same chip as the Dell XPS 13 (2026), and this shows in our lab test results. Similar scores in Geekbench, through and through, and this matches the experience my colleague Tony Polanco had in his XPS 13 review. Both are still behind the MacBook Neo's A18 Pro, which says a lot about what Apple's smartphone chips can achieve.

Otherwise, the Swift Air 14 surprisingly pulls ahead in our Handbrake test, which transcodes a 4K video to 1080p. An impressive result, but still not good enough for video editing or complex work (and goes to show the limitations of 8GB of RAM). In the Blackmagic SSD test, the Swift Air 14 offers faster speeds than the MacBook Neo, but still doesn't come close to the Dell XPS 13.

Here's something that isn't so surprising: The Acer Swift Air 14 is not made for gaming. Really. Getting under 5 frames per second in Borderlands 3 is, well, I'm not sure how it even opened the game. We even tried Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but the game kept crashing before we could even benchmark it. But that's okay, because this isn't meant to be a laptop to game on.

For general performance that doesn't require heavy loads, demanding apps or 3D creative work, the Swift Air 14 has what it takes.

Battery life, and then some

This is the Acer Swift Air 14's crowning achievement. It isn't the first Acer laptop to come with long-lasting battery life (the Acer Swift 14 AI I tested can attest), but it's certainly the most affordable it's been. Battery life in a laptop is always a key factor, and the Swift Air 14 shows you don't need to spend MacBook Pro M5 Pro or Dell XPS 14 (2026) prices to get a device that can last you well past a typical working day.

Using our battery life test, which involves web surfing and streaming video at 150 nits of screen brightness, the Acer Swift Air 14 lasted an exceptional 16 hours and 52 minutes. For those who often travel, or don't want to keep finding a power outlet just to use their laptop, this is amazing battery life for the price.

While the MacBook Neo and Dell XPS 13 offer great battery life, too, the Swift Air 14 goes the extra mile with nearly 17 hours of juice. The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x, which we applauded for having incredible battery life at a budget price, lasted a still-impressive 16 hours and 30 minutes, but the Swift Air 14 pushes the limits further. Don't worry about bringing its 65W USB Type-C power adapter everywhere you go.

Acer Swift Air 14 review: The downs

As much as I have praise for Acer's Swift Air 14, it's not without its setbacks, especially when it comes to buuld quality around the keyboard and lackluster webcam. Plus, there's no Wi-Fi 6E or Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity here, unlike the Dell XPS 13. Not a major flaw, but still a small loss.

A dip in the keys

Typing on the Swift Air 14 is a "just fine" experience, as each key doesn't feel cheap with each press, but it does feel a bit squishy, too. But as I'm typing, I notice the deck has a flex that caves in towards the middle a tad too much.

While I don't imagine it snapping by simply typing on it, it doesn't fill me with confidence that this is a sturdy build that will last after too much pressure is applied. It's likely that this is a result of keeping the laptop lightweight, but at the detriment of delivering a stable build around its keyboard. It's not a deal-breaker, but definitely something to be aware of.

Webcam woes

Yet another laptop webcam that makes me look like a grainy potato. It isn't too surprising, as this usually comes with the territory on budget laptops, but it would have been nice to see more pixels, lighting and detail when I'm on video calls.

At the very least, the 1080p Infrared camera is usable if you just need to hop on a quick call. And it also works with Windows Hello to sign in to your laptop quickly. But prepare to look blurry and washed out with this on. Instead, you could hook up one of the best webcams.

Prepare for bloatware

I'll keep this brief. Bloatware is incredibly annoying to see when first starting up an all-new laptop, especially when it takes up too many tiles on the taskbar. There's Booking.com and Dropbox, and even Forge of Empires which was new to me. And of course, McAfee shows its face again with constant pop ups.

They crowd the taskbar and take up resources, so I recommend uninstalling and chucking them out as soon as possible.

Acer Swift Air 14 review: Verdict

Let's put it this way: if I were handed the Acer Swift Air 14 as my official work laptop from a company, I'd be pretty happy working on it. Honestly, that should say oceans to the many people who got dealt a bad hand with the work laptop they were given (spoiler: they're mostly cruddy).

It's an excellent budget laptop that features excellent battery life that's hard to beat, and even stands up to the MacBook Neo and Dell XPS 13 (2026). Despite its certain setbacks, like the flex in the keyboard and poor webcam, it delivers many perks for the price.

Is it one of the best budget laptops you can buy? Yes, especially since that pool is dwindling. However, at the same price, there's good reason to lean towards the Dell XPS 13 (2026) instead, considering that it comes with a 13.4-inch 2.5K (2560 x 1600) touchscreen with a 120Hz variable refresh rate, along with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity.

Still, if a longer-lasting budget laptop is what you're after, the Acer Swift Air 14 should be on your radar.
