Kim Jong Un death rumours: Social media has been abuzz since Sunday with one question; is Kim Jong Un still alive? According to the rumour, the North Korean leader suffered a cerebral haemorrhage, was rushed to a hospital in Beijing and died there, while his sister, Kim Yo-jong, has quietly taken over the country.
The claim first appeared in posts by Wanjun Xie, who describes himself as chairman of the China Democracy Party, on 18 October. Some tabloids soon went further and reported a coma, treating it as settled fact. On Tuesday, North Korean state media answered with fresh photographs of Kim at a garment and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang.
What is going on with kim jong un? Death rumours and what would happen in the first 24 hours if he died
Neither the death claim nor the coma story has been backed by any government or established news agency so far. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) says Kim toured the National Garment and Footwear Exhibition on 19 October and praised the progress of the country's light industry. Reports say his daughter, Kim Ju-ae, and his wife, Ri Sol-ju, were with him. The pictures were released a day later.
These photographs cut both ways. North Korea controls every image that leaves the country, so outsiders cannot independently check when a picture was taken or how healthy the man in it really is. They weaken the death story but do not prove good health, and the claim about Kim Yo-jong taking charge remains just as unverified.
History also advises patience. In 2020, Kim stayed out of sight for about 20 days, death rumours spread across the world, and he then appeared at a ceremony shown on state media. South Korea's defence minister had said at the time that Kim went missing for long stretches several times before, the longest being 27 days the previous year. In 2021, South Korea's spy agency dismissed a tabloid report about Kim Yo-jong staging a coup as untrue. Whenever the Kim family goes quiet, speculation tends to run ahead of facts, and on the evidence available, the balance leans towards Kim being alive.
If Kim Jong Un died: the first 24 hours
North Korea would not rush to tell the world. When Kim Jong Il died on 17 December 2011, state television took about 51 hours to announce it. In such a gap, a small circle of senior officials would most likely confirm the death, make sure the army and the party stayed loyal, and settle on a message. In 2011, by the time the news finally aired, the public was already being told to rally behind Kim Jong Un as the "great successor."
There is no vice president waiting in the wings. The country has no publicly known succession rule, and it has never officially named an heir. Even so, the state would not freeze. Ministries, military commanders and the ruling Workers' Party would carry on with routine work while a far smaller group decided who should lead. The confusing part is that ordinary North Koreans, and even foreign governments, might not know who is actually making the big decisions. For South Korea, Japan, China and the United States, the biggest worry would be who controls the nuclear weapons.
Who could take charge: Kim Ju-ae, Kim Yo-jong or a group
The name most often discussed is Kim Ju-ae, believed to be around 13 years old. She first appeared in public in 2022, holding her father's hand in front of an intercontinental ballistic missile. Since then she has been seen at missile launches and military ceremonies, and she travelled with him to China in 2025.
South Korea's intelligence agency has said it has credible information that she is being positioned as his successor. A 13-year-old can hardly run a nuclear-armed state alone, so an experienced adult would almost certainly have to stand beside her.
The other obvious name is Kim Yo-jong, the leader's younger sister and closest confidante. She drew international attention at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and Pyongyang has never officially confirmed her exact age.
During the 2020 scare, Cheong Seong-chang of South Korea's Sejong Institute put the chance of her being named leader at more than 90%. That was before Ju-ae became so visible, so it is no forecast for today.
In the end, nobody outside Pyongyang's inner circle knows how a succession would play out. It could be the daughter with her aunt as guardian, the sister on her own, or a small group of generals and party veterans sharing power.
