Nairobi - Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has suffered a significant legal setback after the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) issued interim orders blocking the Azimio La Umoja Coalition from renaming itself The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA).

In court documents seen by TUKO.co.ke, the Tribunal directed the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to halt any further steps toward formally registering the new name while a naming dispute remains unresolved.
Why the tribunal blocked the Ukombozi Alliance name
The case was brought by a petitioner who argued he had already reserved the name Ukombozi Peoples Party (UPP) with the ORPP, making it legally untenable for the same registrar to issue a variation of the name "Ukombozi" to the Azimio coalition. The Wiper Patriotic Front is also party to the dispute.
In its ruling on Tuesday, October 13, the Tribunal ordered that the ORPP refrain from approving, gazetting, registering, or taking any administrative steps towards formalising TUA as the coalition's new identity.
"That pending the inter partes hearing and determination of this Application, an interim order be issued restraining the 1st Respondent, whether by itself, its officers, servants or agents, from approving, gazetting, registering or taking further administrative steps towards the registration of the 2nd Respondent under the name 'The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA)'," the Tribunal ruled.
What happens next
The PPDT certified the matter as urgent, scheduling October 29 as the next mention date. At that hearing, the Tribunal will confirm whether the ORPP has complied with the interim directives before issuing further directions on the substantive dispute.
The orders represent a direct obstacle to Azimio's rebranding efforts ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Kalonzo's camp having publicly signalled plans to transform the coalition's identity under the Ukombozi banner.
