Cooler temperatures swept through New York City this past weekend, which means one thing: coat season is here. And what better excuse than to refresh your outerwear wardrobe? After all, when temperatures drop, your coat becomes the look. And if you’re anything like us, we’re itching to wear a coat that makes a statement.
The Fall 2026 Coat Trends to Shop
Strong outerwear anchored the fall 2026 collections. Toggle coats appeared in both familiar neutrals and bold color stories, fastened with leather or woven rope, at Dries Van Noten, Louis Vuitton, and Polo Ralph Lauren. Elsewhere, the shearling—a perennial favorite—returned in sculpted form with a cinched waist, offering a fresh take on cold-weather dressing at Loewe and Bottega Veneta.
Equally noteworthy were the robe coats (belts optional) at Colleen Allen and Calvin Klein, cut in soft shapes for a natural drape. The funnel-neck coat remained a key style for the season, too iterated on in midi and maxi lengths at Gucci and Tory Burch. On the more maximalist side of the spectrum, we saw a steady supply of animal print options, along with jacquard and fur-trimmed takes, for a sense of emboldened everyday glamour.
This season’s outerwear trends have you, expectedly, covered, whether you’re replacing an old faithful, working in a statement piece, or channeling a bit of both.

The Toggle Coat
The toggle coat might be a classic, but it’s been a minute since we talked about it. Its return has been swift this season, as seen at Dries Van Noten and Polo Ralph Lauren, with unexpected toggle closures and fresh crops.

Shearling With Shape
A little shearling was to be expected, and this season’s option get a more structured look. Peplums, or otherwise slightly contoured waists, give it fresh shape.

Wild Thing
Animal print isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Whether it’s leopard, fawn, or cheetah, the runways made a strong case for the pattern in every spot and stripe imaginable.

The Trench Coat
A timeless option that gets a fresh feel in bold color and swingy cuts. We love it with a funnel-neck closure, too.

Fur Trimmings
Faux fur-trimmed jackets, on the sleeves and hems, brought whimsy (plus a little drama) to the collections. We love them styled with denim, as seen at Conner Ives.
