Guwahati, Oct 17: Fifty thousand safety pins have come together to create a seven-foot-tall Goddess Durga idol, turning an unusual artistic experiment into one of the major attractions of this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in Dhubri.
The striking creation, crafted by Dhubri sculptor Sanjib Basak, is more than an elaborate piece of art. Made entirely from safety pins, the idol is a tribute to women and a reminder of the social messages Basak has sought to convey through his unconventional Durga creations.
A sculptor with a flair for transforming discarded objects into works of art, Basak has made a name for himself by giving everyday materials an extraordinary purpose. In previous years, he has fashioned Durga idols using discarded tablets, buttons, syringes, beads and other materials, each creation carrying a message intended to spark public awareness.
This year, he has turned to safety pins — objects commonly found in households — to craft the goddess in a form that is both visually striking and symbolic.
The idol will be on display at the Rashmi Sangha Puja Mandap in Panchmore, where visitors can view the painstaking work that went into assembling the 50,000 pins.
Basak, who works in the Assam Government’s Disaster Management Department, pursues his artistic passion alongside his official responsibilities. He completes his government duties during the day and spends his nights at home working on his creations.
His innovative sculptures have earned recognition from the Assam Book of World Records, the India Book of Records and other record platforms. He has also received several awards for his artistic contributions.
For Basak, the annual Durga idol is an opportunity to move beyond conventional materials and use art to communicate a message. This year, thousands of tiny safety pins have been transformed into a towering tribute to the goddess — and to women.
