A Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, with eThekwini residents warned of heavy rain, damaging winds and possible flooding through Monday, October 26.
The eThekwini Municipality said the region was expected to be significantly affected, with heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning posing risks to residents, infrastructure and motorists.
The warning is expected to remain in effect until Monday evening, with the municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services on high alert.
SAWS warned that severe thunderstorms could cause localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements in parts of central and eastern KwaZulu-Natal.
Durban weather: Heavy rain, hail and flooding risks
The forecast conditions could result in flooding on roads, bridges and in low-lying areas. Poor visibility and slippery road surfaces could also make driving dangerous.
Residents in flood-prone areas, particularly those living in informal settlements, have been urged to take precautions and remain alert as conditions develop.
The municipality advised motorists to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance and exercise caution when travelling during wet weather.
“Where possible, residents are encouraged to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel,” the municipality said.
Residents have also been warned not to attempt crossing swollen rivers or streams, particularly when water levels exceed ankle height.
Durban emergency services on high alert
The municipality said its Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services were on high alert and prepared to respond to weather-related incidents.
Residents have been urged to monitor official municipal communication channels for updates, as the warning may change depending on weather conditions.
SAWS’ broader forecast for Sunday and Monday indicates partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms possible over the central and eastern parts of South Africa.
Severe thunderstorms are possible over KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern half of the Eastern Cape.
The weather service has also warned of extremely high fire danger over most of the central interior, as well as in places over northern KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
