The Chittagong University chapter of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh's youth group organised a clean-up and awareness campaign at the university's railway station to improve the surrounding environment and promote food safety and hygiene.
More than 50 volunteers participated in the "Campus Clean Initiative", which began at 1pm yesterday (12 October), according to the press release.
The programme followed a recent inspection of food shops around the station, during which the youth group reported finding severely unhygienic conditions at one outlet. The university's proctorial body subsequently intervened and temporarily closed the shop.
The organisers said the campaign aimed to sustain efforts to ensure food safety while making the station and its surroundings cleaner and more pleasant.
During the drive, volunteers removed rubbish from the station platform, adjacent railway tracks and surrounding areas. They also conducted an awareness campaign among local traders and shopkeepers on maintaining cleanliness and serving food hygienically.
The organisers supplied all participating volunteers with the necessary cleaning equipment.
Chittagong University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Md Shafiqul Islam inaugurated the programme as the chief guest. Proctor Professor Dr Md Kamrul Hossain attended as the special guest.
Youth CAB's university chapter General Secretary Tanzim Ashraf Ratul chaired the programme.
In their remarks, the chief and special guests praised the students' voluntary participation and sense of social responsibility. The university administration assured the youth group of its support for future activities serving the public interest.
The guests also stressed the need to install sufficient rubbish bins immediately to help maintain cleanliness in the station area.
Leaders of the youth group said they would continue organising social, awareness and voluntary activities to protect students' health, ensure food safety and strengthen environmental awareness.
