MWANZA: SENGEREMA District Council recorded a 97 per cent implementation rate for school feeding programmes in 123 primary schools during the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year, compared with 75 per cent in 59 secondary schools.
The figures, covering July to September 2026, were presented by the council’s Nutrition Officer, Ms Neema Sappy, during a District Nutrition Committee meeting held yesterday.
The meeting reviewed the implementation of nutrition activities, with a focus on school feeding programmes and community participation in improving children’s nutrition.
Ms Sappy said parents had responded positively by contributing food to support school meals, but urged them to honour commitments made during meetings organised by school and village committees.
She said sustained parental participation was essential to maintaining the programme and ensuring that pupils received adequate meals while at school.
The committee also emphasised the need for villages to continue observing Health and Nutrition Days to raise awareness of proper nutrition and strengthen community participation in health-related activities.

Ms Sappy said the initiatives were intended to improve children’s well-being and ensure they received adequate nutrition to support their participation in classroom activities.
She noted that proper nutrition was essential for creating a conducive learning environment and enabling pupils to benefit fully from education.
District Nutrition Committee Chairperson, Mr Edward Maduhu, called on officials and technical staff from various departments to strengthen the monitoring and supervision of school feeding activities.
“Effective oversight is necessary to identify implementation challenges, improve accountability and ensure the programmes achieve their intended objectives,” he said.
Mr Maduhu also urged officials to intensify public awareness campaigns and encourage communities to contribute food to schools.
