The Comptroller General of Customs, CG Bashiru Adewale Adeniyi Tuesday stated that the Nigeria Customs Service has collected about ₦4.03 trillion of its 2026 target of ₦11.07 trillion in the first half of this year
CG Adeniyi stated this while delivering a lecture titled: “Why Customs Matters: Revenue, Security and Nationhood in a Borderless World” at the Trenchard hall, University of Ibadan at the 3rd Distinguished Personality lecture of the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Security Management (TECESM), University of Ibadan.
He stated that the Nigeria Customs service is determined to pursue the target through compliance, data and facilitation, not through harassment at the ports, because a target met by choking trade would be a false victory.
“Our 2026 target of ₦11.07 trillion is demanding. We collected about ₦4.03 trillion in the first half, while tensions in the Middle East slowed cargo. We will pursue the target through compliance, data and facilitation, not through harassment at the ports, because a target met by choking trade would be a false victory”, he said
CG Adeniyi added, ” The Service collected about ₦3.2 trillion in 2023, ₦6.105 trillion in 2024 and ₦7.28 trillion in 2025, against a target of ₦6.58 trillion”.
“The better test is 2025, when the exchange rate was steadier. Revenue still grew by about 19 per cent and beat its target. Firms certified under our Authorised Economic Operator programme raised their revenue contribution by about 30 per cent. That is growth from compliance and better systems, and it is the growth we want.”
He stated that some have attributed this growth to the exchange rate alone, adding, ” Currency adjustment played its part, since duty is assessed in naira. But exchange rates do not catch undervaluation, close leakages or clear compliant traders faster. Better valuation, sharper risk management, digital platforms and tighter enforcement did that work.”
