Police have identified the Toyota Fortuner involved in the death of a pet dog in Dhaka's Gulshan area after the dog's owner filed a case using the vehicle's registration number.
However, the driver remains unidentified as investigators examine CCTV footage and interview witnesses.
SI Alamgir, duty officer at Gulshan Police Station, told The Business Standard (TBS) that the case was filed last night (12 October) and legal proceedings were under way.
Investigation officer Sakhawat Hossain said police were reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing local residents to identify the driver. They were also examining footage showing the vehicle entering the residence.
He added that preliminary evidence suggested possible driver negligence in Kai's death.
The dog's owner, Ipsa Adiba, appealed for help identifying the person responsible in a Facebook post yesterday.
According to Adiba, Kai, a four-year-old Siberian Husky, was playing outside on Road 63 in Gulshan around 9am on 22 September when a Toyota Fortuner ran over the dog and drove away.
She said security guards at nearby buildings tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver did not get out.
Describing Kai as her child and someone who meant more to her than family, Adiba urged people to help identify the person responsible.
Meanwhile, expatriate journalist Zulkarnain Saer said in a Facebook post today (13 October) that the vehicle's owner had been identified.
Citing multiple sources, Saer claimed that the owner's adult child, who has an intellectual disability, often drove the vehicle short distances for recreation.
According to the sources cited by Saer, the young man was driving when the incident occurred, while the vehicle's regular driver was seated beside him.
However, officer Sakhawat told TBS that police had yet to confirm who was driving at the time of the incident.
The investigation is ongoing, and further legal action will depend on its findings, he said.
