AG Seville Shipyard has won the competition to continue operating the ship repair facilities at Spain’s Port of Seville, clearing an important hurdle for a proposed €10m ($11.2m) investment programme.
Seville Port Authority’s board approved the selection of AG Seville Shipyard on October 20, allowing the company to retain its position at the former Astilleros del Guadalquivir facilities.
The operator’s existing concession expires in December. The new concession will cover approximately 22,000 sq m of port land and infrastructure, including the dry dock, the southern section of the Muelle de Armamento and a disused slipway.
The concession can run for up to 25 years, although final administrative approval is still required before the new agreement becomes effective.
AG Seville Shipyard faced competition for the facilities from Spanish maritime group Boluda, which had also expressed interest in taking over the site.
The successful operator has controlled part of the former Seville shipyard since 2017, developing ship repair and maintenance operations at facilities that had suffered years of decline following the collapse of the former public shipyard.
The company plans to invest approximately €10m ($11.2m) in modernisation and expansion projects under the new concession.
The tender conditions also require the successful operator to invest at least €3m ($3.4m) during the first three years, including improvements to the slipway and dry dock infrastructure.
The larger €10m programme is AG Seville’s proposed investment plan, rather than an amount separately confirmed as contractually committed in the latest announcement. The port authority also approved an additional €4.2m ($4.7m) for improvements to Seville’s port free zone.
The decision raises the total budget for modernising the area to €8m ($9m), covering electrical infrastructure, roads, lighting and other facilities serving businesses operating within the port’s industrial zone.
The port authority will oversee procurement and technical management of the improvement projects.
