More than 6,000 members of the Special Response Battalion (SRB) have been deployed to ensure security during Durga Puja across the country, with 2,457 personnel assigned to special security duties daily, the force's Director General Ahsan Habib Palash has said.
The director general disclosed the information this evening (15 October) after inspecting security arrangements at Mirpur Central Temple in the capital.
He said more than 6,000 members from the force's 15 battalions were deployed to provide round-the-clock security at puja mandaps nationwide.
The force is conducting 549 pickup patrols and 447 motorcycle patrols daily in important areas and along key roads, he added.
Palash said no specific threat of sabotage had been reported so far. However, the SRB's dog squad and bomb disposal team were prepared to respond to any untoward incident, sabotage attempt or suspicious activity.
He said the force was also using technology to strengthen security, including its Sharadiya Surokkha application to monitor the overall situation around the clock. The functionality of CCTV cameras installed at puja mandaps was also being monitored regularly.
The SRB's cyber-monitoring team was conducting round-the-clock surveillance of social media and fact-checking to counter attempts to spread misinformation and rumours that could disrupt the celebrations, he added.
Measures had also been taken to ensure the safety of female visitors and prevent harassment at puja mandaps, Palash said.
On Bijoya Dashami, SRB members will conduct special patrols along designated routes for transporting and immersing idols. They will maintain security at immersion sites until the process is completed peacefully within the stipulated time.
Asked whether any mandaps had been identified as vulnerable or faced specific threats, the SRB chief said none had been identified as high-risk and the force had not detected any specific threat so far.
