New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia debuts in her first press conference - analysis

It took Katie Zacharia approximately 13 minutes to offer a first glimpse of how she intends to handle one of the most visible jobs in Washington.

Making her debut as White House press secretary on Tuesday morning, Zacharia praised President Donald Trump, called on just three reporters, delivered a significant announcement about the future of the US ambassador to Greece, and offered a brief, unexpectedly amusing glimpse of her nerves when she accidentally referred to her husband as "my president."

The new press secretary, who succeeded Karoline Leavitt, appeared visibly excited as she stepped up to the podium in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. Her voice occasionally sounded tense, with audible breaths between sentences, but she maintained a smile and made her central message unmistakable: She had long wanted to work for Donald Trump.

"I have wanted to work for him for a very long time," Zacharia said, thanking the president for placing his trust in her.

Anyone expecting a lengthy introductory exchange between the new spokesperson and the White House press corps, however, was in for a short encounter.

Much of the briefing was devoted to prepared remarks highlighting what Zacharia described as the administration's accomplishments, from wages and prescription drug prices to energy production, foreign investment, manufacturing and border security.

"President Trump is fighting and delivering for American workers every minute of every day," she declared.

With just three weeks remaining until the midterm elections, Zacharia also devoted considerable attention to Trump's campaign rallies, describing record attendance and growing enthusiasm among Republican voters.

When Zacharia finally opened the floor to questions, only three reporters were called upon: Nick Gilbertson of the conservative Breitbart News, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy, and Elina Shirazi of the Daily Mail.

The selection was notable not only because of the outlets represented, but also because of the way the briefing unfolded. Zacharia called on the reporters directly, by name, rather than inviting questions from the room more broadly.

There was no indication that the exchanges had been arranged in advance, but the carefully managed format left little room for spontaneous participation by the rest of the press corps.

The first question came from Gilbertson, occupying the White House's designated new media seat.

After praising Leavitt for opening the briefing room to voices beyond traditional news organizations, Gilbertson asked whether Zacharia intended to continue that approach.

"My predecessor Karoline Leavitt did an incredible job," she replied. "We are absolutely going to keep it, and we're going to expand on it to the extent possible. We love new media, and we want to be able to embrace it."

Asked whether Trump's campaign schedule would intensify ahead of the elections, she answered without hesitation.

"Absolutely, you can expect more of the midterm blitz."

She added that Kentucky had been included in the president's upcoming travel schedule, alongside stops in Georgia and Florida.

The most substantive question about Zacharia's new role came from Doocy, the Fox News correspondent.

He pointed out that she was taking office just three weeks before midterm elections that Trump himself had described as challenging for Republicans.

"Is your job just to speak about White House matters, or is it to make things less tough for Republicans in the midterms?" Doocy asked.

Zacharia did not draw a clear distinction between the two responsibilities.

"Well, but Peter, I get to do what I was doing on the outside already, which was hoping to amplify, multiply, and expand upon President Trump's incredible agenda for the American people," she replied.

She said her aim was to communicate the administration's achievements more effectively, working closely with a president who, in her words, "is his own best spokesperson."

Her answer suggested that, at least in her understanding of the role, promoting the president's agenda and helping communicate his political successes are closely intertwined.

Doocy then switched to a more direct foreign policy question: Had the United States stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine?

"I'll have to get back to you on that," Zacharia replied.

The briefing's most significant news came in response to a question from Shirazi, who asked about Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece.

Trump had said the previous day that he was considering firing Guilfoyle amid reports raising questions about her conduct.

Shirazi asked whether the administration had established a timeline for a potential dismissal and whether possible replacements were already being considered.

Zacharia's response was brief but consequential.

"We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign," she announced. "She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well."

The statement marked a significant development in the controversy surrounding Guilfoyle, a former Fox News personality who was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr.

Reports had raised questions about her conduct in the role and her dealings with donors and business figures. Her attorneys have denied the allegations against her.

For Zacharia, it was an unusually consequential announcement to deliver during a first appearance that otherwise focused heavily on celebrating the administration's achievements.

Then the questions turned personal.

Shirazi noted that Zacharia is the mother of four children and that her family had been living in California. She asked how the new press secretary intended to manage the demands of her White House position while raising a young family.

She also asked whether Leavitt, who left her role to spend more time with her own family, had offered any advice.

Zacharia became noticeably more animated.

"Well, first of all, I want to give my husband an amazing shout-out," she began.

She explained that she has four children, aged 12, 10, 8 and 6, including three boys.

"I adore my family. I love them. They are my priority," she said, stressing that spending evenings with her children remained extremely important to her.

Then came the moment that briefly interrupted the seriousness of the briefing.

"So my president, excuse me, my husband," Zacharia said, immediately correcting herself.

"That's a, that's a good one," she added.

The slip was a small but revealing moment in an otherwise controlled debut, with the new press secretary apparently having her boss on her mind even while discussing her husband.

Regaining her composure, Zacharia explained that her husband had brought all four children to Washington for the week because the family was celebrating two birthdays.

"We are very, very protective of celebrating birthdays as a family," she said.

The family, she added, plans to relocate to Washington.

Zacharia also spoke about stepping away from her professional career between 2014 and 2020 while raising her children, and how she later tried to incorporate family life into her work.

She recalled bringing her children to the Fox News bureau, where they would sometimes sit beside her as she prepared for television appearances.

Regarding her predecessor, Zacharia said Leavitt had been an important source of support and had offered advice on navigating the demands of the position.

Still, she acknowledged that the job might not lend itself to a conventional work-life balance.

"I think this job is not one you necessarily balance," she said.

She then found another opportunity to praise the president.

"President Trump is the most family-friendly president we've ever had," Zacharia declared.

She argued that Trump's willingness to appoint her, knowing she had four children and that the role would be demanding, demonstrated his confidence in her ability to meet those responsibilities.

Just as the exchange became more personal, Zacharia brought the proceedings to an abrupt end.

"In fact, I am going to end it because President Trump is heading out to Marine One for our historic trip to Alaska, and we can ask him all of the questions out there," she said.

The president was preparing to depart the White House for Joint Base Andrews, where Air Force One would take him to Alaska for another campaign rally.

As Zacharia prepared to leave, reporters could still be heard attempting to ask additional questions, including whether Trump had personally spoken with Guilfoyle about her departure.

But the new spokesperson was already wrapping up.

And with that, her first White House briefing was over almost as quickly as it had begun.

Zacharia, an attorney and conservative political commentator who served as a communications adviser to Trump Media & Technology Group before her appointment, enters the role at a particularly sensitive moment for the administration.

Her predecessor, Leavitt, became one of the administration's most recognizable public faces before leaving to focus on her family. Zacharia now faces the task of establishing her own relationship with a press corps accustomed to frequent confrontations, rapid political developments and a president who regularly prefers to speak for himself.

Whether Tuesday's tightly controlled, approximately 13-minute briefing represents a lasting approach or merely the caution of a first appearance remains to be seen.

What was clear from the outset was Zacharia's determination to defend the president enthusiastically, emphasize his achievements, and leave the central stage to him whenever possible.

And judging by that first slip of the tongue, Trump was rarely far from her thoughts - even when she was talking about her husband.
