Why kids who shop with parents learn a hidden life skill

A trip to the supermarket can easily turn into a negotiation over chocolates, biscuits and colourful packets. Parents may be focused on finishing the shopping quickly, keeping the bill within budget and getting everything on the list.

Children, meanwhile, may be asking why one packet costs more than another, whether they can pick the fruit, or why a favourite snack cannot go into the trolley. It may look like an ordinary family outing, but these small interactions can offer children opportunities to practise a skill they will need long after they stop accompanying their parents to the grocery store: making decisions.

From choosing between two products to understanding that spending money on one thing leaves less for another, grocery shopping brings everyday choices into a setting children can see and participate in.

With a little guidance, it can also become an opportunity to introduce early mathematical thinking, budgeting, planning and the ability to weigh options. The important part is not simply taking a child along. It is allowing them to participate in age-appropriate decisions instead of treating them only as passengers in an adult task.

How grocery shopping can become a lesson in decision-making

Children make choices throughout the day, but many decisions made at home are either taken on their behalf or presented as instructions.

A grocery store offers a different experience: several options are visible, prices can be compared, and choices often have immediate consequences.Should the family buy apples or bananas this week? Is the larger packet necessarily better value? If the shopping list includes a few essentials, can an additional treat fit into the budget? These questions encourage children to look beyond what they want in the moment and consider what else matters.A 2025 study published in the journal Appetite, titled Examining the ability of children to make competent purchases in food retailing, investigated purchasing decisions among 692 children aged eight to 10. Researchers used a virtual supermarket simulation and examined factors including hunger, enjoyment, brand awareness, mathematical ability and financial planning. The findings suggested that mathematical skills and financial planning were associated with better purchasing decisions, including fewer impulsive purchases and more cost-effective choices.

Hunger, on the other hand, was associated with poorer purchasing quality, while enjoyment was linked to better adherence to shopping lists. The study does not establish that accompanying parents to a supermarket directly improves decision-making. However, it highlights the kinds of abilities that matter when children have to make purchasing choices.

For parents, the practical takeaway is to give children opportunities to think through a choice rather than simply telling them which product to pick.

Asking, "Which of these two options do you think makes more sense, and why?" can be more useful than immediately supplying the answer. The aim is not to make a child responsible for family spending. It is to help them understand how choices are made.

The hidden mathematics of a shopping trolley

A supermarket is full of opportunities to use mathematics without opening a textbook. Children can count the number of items in a basket, compare prices, estimate the total cost of a few products or check whether the change received at a shop is correct.Younger children can begin with simple comparisons: which packet contains more biscuits, which fruit costs less, or how many tomatoes are needed for the family. Older children can work with quantities, unit prices, discounts and a fixed spending limit.Research suggests that everyday conversations can help make these opportunities more meaningful.A 2019 study published in Mind, Brain, and Education, titled Promoting Math Talk in Adult–Child Interactions Through Grocery Store Signs, observed 179 adult-child pairs shopping in grocery stores.

Researchers compared interactions in which signs encouraged mathematical conversations with interactions prompted by general-language signs or no signs.Adults exposed to the mathematics prompts talked about maths more often than those in the other conditions. The study showed that a simple change in the environment could encourage adults to bring mathematical ideas into an ordinary activity. It did not directly demonstrate long-term improvements in children's maths achievement.

Nevertheless, it illustrates how easily a routine shopping trip can include opportunities to discuss numbers, quantities and comparisons.Parents do not need to turn every aisle into a classroom. A question such as "This packet costs ₹40 and that one costs ₹60. What is the difference?" may be enough. For a younger child, comparing the number of oranges or identifying shapes and colours can be just as appropriate. The idea is to make numbers part of everyday conversation rather than something children encounter only during homework.

Why choosing between products can teach children about money

Money can feel abstract to children when they hear adults discuss salaries, bills or monthly budgets. At a store, however, they can see the relationship between a price tag, a purchase and the amount of money available. For example, parents can explain that the family has planned to buy certain essentials first and can spend a limited amount on additional items. An older child might compare two similar products and calculate which offers better value.

A younger one might be asked to choose one fruit from two options. These small decisions can introduce the idea that money involves trade-offs. Choosing one item may mean postponing another, and the cheapest option is not always the most suitable one.A 2025 study available through Developmental Psychology research literature examined how parents of toddlers and preschoolers talked about money during pretend grocery shopping. The paper, Money talks! The role of parents' discussion of money for preschoolers' math knowledge, discusses how familiar activities involving money can provide opportunities to practise mathematical concepts in meaningful contexts. The research supports the importance of examining how parents talk about money with young children. It should not be interpreted as proof that a single grocery trip will make a child financially literate. For parents, this can mean explaining everyday financial decisions in simple, non-alarming language. Instead of saying, "We cannot afford anything you want," a parent could explain, "We have planned our spending for today, so let's choose one thing from this section."Children can learn that money is a resource to plan with, not simply something that appears when they ask for a product. There is no need to share adult financial worries or make children anxious about household expenses.

What happens when children ask for something parents do not want to buy?

One of the most familiar supermarket scenes involves a child asking for a snack and a parent saying no. It can be tempting to see the exchange as a distraction from the real task of shopping. Yet the way parents handle these disagreements can also offer children a chance to understand boundaries, preferences and negotiation.A 2006 study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior observed 142 adult-child shoppers across 11 supermarkets in the Minneapolis–St Paul metropolitan region. In 67 of 133 observations, children initiated a request. Of those requests, 55.2% were for sweets or snacks, and adults agreed to nearly half of the requests. The researchers also noted that explaining a refusal was among the strategies parents used when declining a child's request. They suggested that grocery shopping could offer opportunities for adults to reinforce children's interest in food and nutrition. The findings describe shopping interactions rather than proving which parenting response produces the best long-term outcome. Still, they point to a useful distinction: saying no does not have to end the conversation.A parent might explain that the family already has snacks at home, that the item is not on the list, or that the child can choose a snack for another day. The explanation can be brief and consistent.Children may still protest, and parents do not need to change their decision to prevent disappointment.

Learning to accept a limit is part of dealing with choices in the real world. At the same time, parents can avoid turning every request into a battle. Offering two acceptable options can allow a child some control without handing over the final decision.

Let children participate, but do not expect them to behave like adults

Children's ability to understand prices, compare products and anticipate consequences develops over time. A preschooler may understand that they can choose one fruit but may not grasp the difference between a discount and a genuine saving.

A school-age child may be able to calculate a total but still be influenced by attractive packaging or hunger.A study published in Young Consumers examined seven families over 19 grocery-shopping trips and found that children influenced their parents both directly and indirectly. Their requests and negotiation strategies varied, as did their parents' responses. The study's small, qualitative sample means its findings cannot be generalised to every family.

It nevertheless illustrates that shopping is an interaction in which children observe adults, express preferences and learn how decisions are negotiated.Parents can adapt the experience to a child's age and temperament:

Safety and practicality matter, too. A crowded store, a rushed trip or an overtired child may not be the right setting for a learning exercise. Parents can keep the task short and step in when needed.

The goal is not a perfect shopping trip

Taking children grocery shopping will not automatically make them better decision-makers. The benefits depend on what they are allowed to do, what adults explain and whether children get opportunities to think rather than simply follow instructions.A parent who completes the entire trip while a child sits in the trolley may offer little opportunity for participation. Another parent who invites the child to find three items, compare two products or explain a choice creates small moments for practice. And children will not always make the choice an adult would make. They may choose the brightly coloured packet, miscalculate a price or change their minds. These are not necessarily signs that the exercise has failed. With age-appropriate guidance, they can become moments to explain, reconsider and try again. The larger lesson is that children do not learn every important life skill through formal lessons. Some begin with ordinary family routines: planning a meal, sorting laundry, helping in the kitchen or accompanying a parent to the market. The next time a child asks to put something in the trolley, parents can pause before either agreeing or refusing. A simple question - "Why would you choose this one?" - may reveal how the child is thinking and give them a chance to explain it.The grocery list may still be the adult's responsibility. But learning to weigh options, understand limits and make a reasoned choice is a skill children can gradually begin practising beside them.
