NEW YORK – Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) could allow people to work fewer days while earning enough to support their families comfortably.
In an interview with a local channel in the US, Jeff Bezos said advances in AI could enable people to work just a few hours a day while still earning a sufficient income to meet their household needs.
His remarks reflect the possibility that advances in AI could reshape traditional working patterns, although the extent to which productivity gains translate into higher incomes and shorter workweeks remains uncertain.
Jeff Bezos suggested that, in the future, people might be able to earn substantially more by working just three days a week, with the income of a single family member potentially becoming enough to support an entire household.
He also believes AI will enable businesses to produce more goods with fewer resources, boosting productivity and potentially improving living standards.
Rather than viewing AI as a threat to employment, he argued that the technology could allow people to enjoy a better quality of life while spending less time at work.
He also suggested that AI might not necessarily lead to rising unemployment. Instead, companies could face labour shortages if workers increasingly choose to work fewer hours and prioritise their personal lives.
However, Jeff Bezos acknowledged that a three-day workweek may not become a reality in the near future. Its feasibility would depend on several factors, including wages, working hours and household income.
