Hyundai Glovis said on Oct. 19, that it recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with PhilaPort, the Port of Philadelphia authority in Pennsylvania, and a local developer to cooperate on the expansion development of the Port of Philadelphia and the operation of a finished vehicle terminal.
PhilaPort is pursuing a port expansion project to comprehensively develop finished vehicle and container terminals. As a partner in the project, Hyundai Glovis plans to participate in the finished vehicle segment, secure new berths dedicated to pure car and truck carriers, and enter the finished vehicle terminal operation business. The agreement also includes measures such as securing a new finished vehicle logistics site within the port and extending the contract for an existing site through 2056.
At an event held on October 13 to announce the Port of Philadelphia expansion development, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and officials from the state government and port authority were in attendance. At the event, plans to expand the container and finished vehicle terminals and the direction of public-private cooperation were announced, and Hyundai Glovis was introduced as a key private-sector partner in the port development.
Hyundai Glovis has operated finished vehicle import and export logistics business at the Port of Philadelphia since 2010, and in 2019 expanded its business foundation by opening Southport, a dedicated finished vehicle yard measuring about 640,000 square meters. It currently has about 1 million square meters of finished vehicle logistics space within the Port of Philadelphia and vehicle storage capacity of around 33,600 units. Once development of the new site is completed, its operating area is expected to expand to about 340,000 pyeong, while vehicle storage capacity is projected to increase to 37,600 units.
The Port of Philadelphia has also played an important role in securing the stability of Hyundai Glovis’ global supply chain as the company’s logistics hub on the U.S. East Coast. When operations at the Port of Baltimore were suspended following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland in 2024, Hyundai Glovis continued stable vehicle logistics operations by using the Port of Philadelphia as an alternative logistics base. Through the latest agreement, the company plans to further strengthen the function of this strategic hub.
Hyundai Glovis plans to broaden the scope of its logistics services by adding car carrier terminal operations to its existing business base centered on finished vehicle transportation and storage. Through this, it aims to strengthen E2E (End-to-End) integrated logistics services spanning maritime transport, terminal operation, storage and inland transportation, and enhance its logistics competitiveness in North America.
The company also plans to expand its business scope beyond finished vehicle logistics into high and heavy cargo such as commercial vehicles and construction equipment, as well as EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project logistics, while also expanding its Atlantic route business.
A Hyundai Glovis official said, “We plan to develop Philadelphia into a core hub in the logistics supply chain on the eastern United States,” adding, “Through this, we will provide our customers with more stable and efficient integrated logistics services.”
