The Blockchain Security Standards Council (BSSC) has released a new security specification designed to strengthen protections across the full lifecycle of blockchain transactions, addressing vulnerabilities in consumer wallets, enterprise transaction systems, and smart contract deployment workflows.
The Blockchain Transaction Lifecycle Security Standard establishes security requirements for the different components involved in creating, reviewing, signing, and submitting blockchain transactions. Its primary objective is to ensure that the transaction a user intends to authorize matches the transaction that is ultimately signed and executed.
The new standard introduces a lifecycle-wide approach to blockchain transaction security, focusing on verifying user intent and enforcing security requirements across the tools and systems involved in transaction processing.
The initiative comes as blockchain users and organizations continue to face risks from malicious transactions, compromised interfaces and weaknesses in transaction verification. Such vulnerabilities can lead to significant financial losses, highlighting the need for security measures that extend beyond individual wallets.
Standard Targets Transaction Verification Risks
Blockchain transactions typically pass through several stages before reaching a network. These may include transaction creation, data preparation, review, signing, and submission. Security weaknesses at any stage can create opportunities for attackers to manipulate transaction details or mislead users about the actions they are approving.
The BSSC specification seeks to address these risks by defining the security responsibilities of components throughout the transaction lifecycle. It emphasizes ensuring that transaction information is properly verified and that users can understand the details of an operation before authorizing it.
The standard’s underlying concern is the gap that can emerge between a transaction’s original purpose and the final operation submitted to a blockchain. If transaction details change during processing or are presented inaccurately, users may approve actions that differ from their intentions.
The announcement cited the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in 2025 as an example of the scale of losses associated with major security incidents. It also highlighted smaller, more frequent transaction-related problems that collectively contribute to recurring losses across the industry.
Max Courchesne-Mackie, director of security engineering at Figment and a co-editor of the specification, said the framework was designed to establish security practices for transaction systems that had historically received limited scrutiny. He explained that its broad definition of the transaction lifecycle was intended to accommodate different applications and system architectures while maintaining expectations for security and transparency.
Broader Scope Than Wallet Security Rankings
The BSSC standard differs from approaches that primarily assess or rank the security of individual wallets. Instead, it focuses on implementing security requirements across the wider transaction ecosystem, covering both integrated wallet applications and modular systems assembled from specialized components.
This distinction is important for enterprises that use separate tools for transaction construction, approval, signing, and execution. Such organizations may operate complex workflows involving multiple systems, employees, and security controls.
The specification is designed to serve wallet developers, enterprises managing digital assets, smart contract deployment teams, and technology procurement leaders evaluating blockchain transaction infrastructure.
For developers, the requirements could provide a framework for incorporating security protections into transaction tools from the design stage. Enterprises may use the specification to assess existing workflows, identify weaknesses, and establish more consistent verification procedures.
Security and procurement teams could also use the standard as a reference when evaluating third-party transaction infrastructure. This could help organizations assess whether the systems they purchase provide appropriate protections across the complete transaction process rather than focusing on isolated components.
Industry Adoption Could Reduce Systemic Risk
The BSSC is an industry organization that brings together security specialists, technology providers and other stakeholders to develop open standards and practical security guidance for blockchain systems. Its work focuses on identifying vulnerabilities, addressing emerging threats and encouraging stronger security practices across the ecosystem.
BSSC has released the Blockchain Transaction Lifecycle Security Standard, establishing security requirements for every stage of a blockchain transaction, from creation and signing through execution.
The specification provides a framework for wallet developers, enterprises, smart contract teams, and security leaders to strengthen transaction security, improve transparency, and help ensure transactions execute as intended.

The council said wider adoption of the new specification could improve trust by promoting consistent verification, validation and protection of transaction data. Applying common security principles across different platforms may also help organizations reduce recurring vulnerabilities and limit exposure to avoidable losses.
However, the standard’s effectiveness will depend on how developers and organizations implement its requirements, assess their systems, and maintain security controls as threats evolve. Publication alone does not guarantee that a wallet or transaction platform complies with the specification or is free from vulnerabilities.
The BSSC has encouraged organizations that build or use blockchain transaction tools to review the standard, compare their existing systems against its requirements, and implement appropriate safeguards. It has also invited industry participants to submit feedback to support future revisions.

The release marks an effort to establish a common security framework for blockchain transactions, with broad implementation potentially improving transaction transparency and reducing risks across consumer and enterprise systems.
