West Bengal Congress president Shubhankar Sarkar on Saturday alleged that lapses in the investigation by central agencies led the Supreme Court to grant bail to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in a financial irregularities case, news agency Press Trust of India reported.
Ghosh was the principal of the medical college when a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on its premises on August 9, 2024.
Sarkar and other senior Congress leaders paid floral tributes to a half-bust of the victim, known as 'Abhaya', on the hospital premises and vowed to continue their fight for justice. Abhaya, meaning fearless, is the name given to the victim. The fibreglass statue, titled 'Abhaya: Cry of the Hour', depicts a woman screaming.
"Sandip Ghosh securing bail is the result of laxity in the investigation by central agencies. Our visit was aimed at registering a protest against the development and renewing the party's resolve to fight for justice for the victim," Sarkar told PTI.
The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed Ghosh's plea challenging the Calcutta High Court's February 23 order rejecting his bail application. The bench considered the length of his detention and the progress of the trial, noting that he had been in custody for more than two years and that only seven of the 147 witnesses had been examined.
The Central Bureau of Investigation probed the case against Ghosh and named him in its charge sheet on August 24, 2024, according to PTI. He was accused of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery and using forged documents under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, along with offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
"Even amid the celebrations of the Durga Puja, we have not forgotten Abhaya and never will. Our fight for justice for her will continue," the Congress said.
The Congress protested against Ghosh's release on bail and reiterated that it would continue seeking justice for the trainee doctor.
