Nairobi City County's Fire and Rescue Services received an alert at approximately 12.11am on October 17, 2026, and immediately activated emergency response protocols at the site, located at Nairobi Block 28/285 in Nairobi Central Ward, Starehe Sub-County.
Multi-agency emergency response
Rescue teams cordoned off the affected area and launched search and rescue operations before transferring incident command to the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) as part of a coordinated multi-agency response.
Comprehensive primary and secondary searches, including the use of canine search teams, were completed by 1.50am.
A personnel accountability exercise subsequently confirmed that all 24 workers present during the incident had been accounted for.
Of the four injured workers, three were transported to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment, according to a situation report issued by the County Executive Committee Member for Built Environment. No fatalities had been recorded as of 12.30pm on Saturday.
Site Safety Assessment Ordered Before Work Resumes
Machinery was deployed to clear debris and stabilise the affected area following the completion of search and rescue operations.
The county government confirmed that a structural safety assessment would be carried out before any further activity is authorised at the site, with the assessment aimed at protecting both workers and members of the public in the surrounding area.
The incident occurred during planned structural demolition intended to prepare the site for redevelopment. Further updates are expected as the multi-agency team concludes its assessments.
