Brentford 1-2 Liverpool: Alexander Isak Fires Reds to Comeback Victory
Liverpool produced a determined second half performance to defeat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Alexander Isak delivering the decisive goal after a chaotic first half that saw the hosts take the lead and lose a player to a red card.
The result highlighted Liverpool’s ability to capitalise on crucial moments, while Brentford were left to reflect on a promising display that unravelled through disciplinary problems. With two players sent off by the final whistle, Keith Andrews’ side paid a significant price for their loss of composure.
Brentford Take Control Before Yarmoliuk Red Card
Brentford looked well placed to frustrate Liverpool after Keane Lewis-Potter gave the hosts the lead in the 44th minute. His superb header, following Igor Thiago’s delivery, rewarded a disciplined first half performance and gave the home crowd plenty to celebrate.
Liverpool had struggled to turn possession into clear opportunities, with Brentford defending aggressively and looking dangerous when moving forward. The opening goal appeared to put Andrews’ team in a strong position heading into the interval.
However, the match changed dramatically in first half stoppage time. Yehor Yarmoliuk was dismissed following what referee John Brooks described as a “headbutting action” involving Liverpool defender Jeremy Jacquet.
The decision left Brentford with a difficult task against opponents who could now exploit their numerical advantage. The timing of the dismissal was particularly damaging, forcing the hosts to reconsider their approach for the entire second half.
Liverpool Respond Through Victor Muñoz
Liverpool increased the pressure after the restart, looking to stretch Brentford’s depleted defence and find a route back into the contest.
Their persistence paid off in the 62nd minute when Víctor Muñoz produced an excellent finish to level the score. Released by Florian Wirtz, the Spanish winger cut inside before beating goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher with a precise left footed strike.
The equaliser shifted the momentum firmly towards Liverpool. Brentford had worked hard to establish their advantage, but playing with ten men made it increasingly difficult to maintain their defensive shape and prevent Liverpool from creating openings.
For Liverpool, Muñoz’s contribution provided the platform for a comeback that had seemed unlikely during the first half.
Alexander Isak Delivers Decisive Liverpool Goal
Eight minutes after Muñoz equalised, Alexander Isak put Liverpool ahead with a clinical finish in the 70th minute.
Bradley Barcola headed down Alexis Mac Allister’s cross, allowing Isak to convert and complete Liverpool’s turnaround. The goal underlined the striker’s importance in decisive moments, giving the visitors a lead they would protect until full time.

Isak’s contribution will be particularly encouraging for Liverpool, with the forward demonstrating the finishing quality required to turn pressure into points. Barcola and Wirtz also played important roles, helping Liverpool make their numerical advantage count.
Brentford Finish With Nine Men
Brentford’s afternoon deteriorated further in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card for a foul on Liverpool substitute Rio Ngumoha.
Reduced to nine players, Brentford had little opportunity to mount a late response. Liverpool saw out the remaining minutes to secure a valuable 2-1 away victory.
The result will give Liverpool confidence in their ability to recover from difficult situations, while Brentford must address the disciplinary lapses that undermined their performance. Lewis-Potter’s opener offered genuine promise, but the dismissals proved decisive.
For Liverpool, Alexander Isak’s winner ensured that a challenging afternoon ended with three points. For Brentford, the focus will turn to regrouping and restoring the discipline needed to compete effectively in their next fixture.
