The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the death of two persons in a road traffic crash on Tuesday.
The tragic event occurred when an articulated vehicle slid backwards and collided with a Mercedes-Benz at Dangi Underpass along the Kano-Zaria Road in Kano.
FRSC’s sector commander, Idris Lawal, said in a statement that the fatal crash, which occurred at about 5:50 p.m., involved a truck with registration number RMG 332 XA, loaded with bitumen, and a Mercedes-Benz C180 car with registration number ABJ 783 GB.
He explained that there were four occupants in the Mercedes-Benz, out of whom two lost their lives.
“Four persons, all adult males, were in the car during the incident. Two were confirmed dead,” he said.
Mr Lawal attributed the incident to brake failure of the fully loaded tipper truck, saying the driver lost control and the vehicle subsequently slid backwards and collided with the Mercedes. He explained that FRSC rescue personnel and other emergency responders evacuated the victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed two dead, while the remaining two were receiving medical attention.
The sector commander extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls.
Mr Lawal warned motorists, transport unions, construction companies and fleet operators against neglecting regular vehicle maintenance, particularly the inspection and servicing of critical components such as brake systems and tyres.
He also urged motorists to adopt defensive driving practices, maintain safe following distances and remain alert to changing road conditions.
Mr Lawal stressed the need for motorists to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
“Regular vehicle maintenance, responsible driving and compliance with traffic regulations are essential to preventing avoidable road crashes and saving lives,” he stated.
He further urged all road users to prioritise safety by adopting responsible driving practices and ensuring that their vehicles are mechanically sound at all times.
