Investment pledges to KwaZulu-Natal, the South African province around the port city of Durban, reached R124.5 billion (about US$7.5 billion). IOL, a South African news site, reported the total on Thursday 15 October after the provincial investment conference.
For US readers, the figure matters because soldiers were sent into Durban days earlier over anti-immigrant violence. The investment pledges beat the province’s R95 billion (about US$5.7 billion) target by nearly R30 billion (about US$1.8 billion).
What Was Pledged in Durban
The 2026 KwaZulu-Natal Investment Conference took place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban, IOL reported. A total of 47 companies and entities made pledges.
The largest single pledge came from Senzo Esihle Rail at R34.104 billion (about US$2.1 billion). Azania MediaWorks followed at R6.5 billion (about US$0.4 billion), and Cedar Falls Properties 205 pledged R4.5 billion (about US$0.3 billion).
Bidvest Freight pledged R2.015 billion (about US$0.1 billion), Afchlor R1.75 billion (about US$0.1 billion) and AJ Property Holdings R1.072 billion (about US$0.06 billion). IOL named only these six amounts, so the other 41 pledges were not itemised.
Who Is Behind the Conference
Premier Thami Ntuli, the head of the provincial government, led the event. Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau, the national minister in charge of trade policy, joined him.
Musa Zondi, the provincial minister for economic development, and Cyril Xaba, the mayor of the eThekwini municipality that governs Durban, also took part. Musawenkosi Myeni, chair of Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal, the provincial investment agency, joined Tau and Ntuli to launch an investment booklet for 2026 to 2028.
Ntuli told the audience that KwaZulu-Natal is “open for business”. He said the pledges would be spread across all districts, adding that “a province that grows in one place is a province at risk”.
Pledges Beat Last Year’s Result
Last year’s investment pledges came to R100.1 billion (about US$6 billion), The Mercury reported on 23 October 2025. This year’s total is about R24 billion (about US$1.5 billion) higher.
The 2025 investment pledges were expected to create about 260,000 construction jobs and more than 60,000 permanent jobs, The Mercury said. Projects were meant to start within three years, and Zondi said some businesses held back because they could not meet that timeline.
The Unrest Behind the Headline
Soldiers began patrolling central Durban on Saturday 10 October after days of anti-immigrant violence, as Rio Times reported at the time. The protests began at the city’s refugee reception office, where a movement called March and March campaigns against illegal immigration.
Police reported 19 arrests in Durban between Thursday 8 and Saturday 10 October. In September, police whisked the mayor away from a hostile crowd during earlier anti-immigrant protests in the city.
IOL’s headline said the billions were pledged despite the protests. The conference took place in the same city where soldiers had patrolled days earlier.
Why Durban Matters to Investors
Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city and home to one of Africa’s busiest container ports. Bidvest Freight, one of the named pledgers, is a logistics company.
The six pledges IOL named add up to about R50 billion (about US$3 billion), or 40 percent of the total. That leaves about R75 billion (about US$4.5 billion) in pledges from the other 41 companies and entities.
What It Means for US Readers
Investors with exposure to South African ports, rail and property will watch whether these investment pledges turn into signed projects. The rand figures also shift with the exchange rate, which stood near 16.58 rand to the US dollar on 15 October.
Travellers and companies with staff in Durban can weigh the investment message against the unrest of early October. Government travel advice remains the best guide to local security.
What Is Not Known
Nobody has said how much of the R124.5 billion (about US$7.5 billion) is signed and funded. IOL named no US company and did not say how many pledges come from foreign investors.
The province has not published a full list of the 47 pledges or a timetable for the projects. It has also not said how many jobs this year’s investment pledges could create.
