The new GTA 6 launch trailer may be short, but its opening line offers an intriguing clue about Jason's past. It could help explain why he ended up working for drug smugglers after leaving the Army.
Jason is one of the two protagonists in GTA 6, but he doesn't come across as a typical gangster. In the footage released so far, he seems more reserved and introverted than many of the series' previous leads. Rockstar has revealed that he spent some time in the Army before eventually finding work with local drug smugglers in the Leonida Keys. How he ended up on the wrong side of the law remains a mystery, fueling plenty of speculation about his past and the circumstances of his departure from the military. Some fans suspect a military mission gone wrong, the loss of fellow soldiers or another traumatic experience. Others believe Jason may simply have never cut ties with the criminal world he grew up in. Then there's the theory that he isn't really a criminal at all, but an undercover operative.

The new launch trailer, released on October 15, appears to lend weight to one particular theory about Jason's past. Right at the beginning, Jason reveals that he didn't leave the Army on good terms and that „people like him“ can't get loans or much of „anything“ else. Exactly what happened during his military service remains unclear. His remarks do suggest, however, that he may have struggled to get his life back on track after leaving the Army, potentially leading him into the drug trade. The widely discussed theory that Jason suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) could also fit this interpretation, although there is no concrete evidence to support it.
The theory has drawn mixed reactions in a recent Reddit thread. While many users consider the possibility of Jason struggling with PTSD plausible, others caution against reading too much into a few lines from the launch trailer. After all, Rockstar hasn't confirmed any of these theories. Whether fans will learn the truth about Jason's past before Grand Theft Auto VI (available for pre-order on Amazon) launches on November 19 remains to be seen.

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
