Kuwait said Saturday that the 81st anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations comes amid serious developments in the Middle East, stressing that the organization’s effectiveness depends on the consistent and fair application of its principles without double standards.
Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Tareq Al-Banai, made the remarks to KUNA on the occasion of United Nations Day, observed annually on October 24. Al-Banai called for continued reform of the UN system, including the Security Council, to ensure fairer representation and strengthen its ability to address contemporary crises.
He emphasized the need to balance the organization’s pillars of peace and security, development and human rights, while giving due consideration to the priorities of developing countries. He condemned Iranian attacks on Kuwait and other Gulf states, describing them as violations of sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.
He called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026), which demands that Iran immediately and unconditionally cease its attacks and provocations against Gulf states and Jordan. He also stressed the Security Council’s responsibility to ensure compliance with its resolutions, prevent further attacks and safeguard regional peace and security.
Al-Banai reaffirmed Kuwait’s support for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and settle disputes peacefully, stressing the importance of non-interference in states’ internal affairs and refraining from the use or threat of force.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, he reiterated Kuwait’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights, particularly self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He called for protecting civilians, ending forced displacement and ensuring safe, and sustained humanitarian aid, while continuing support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Al-Banai reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with the UN and its specialized agencies, highlighting the country’s contributions to humanitarian relief, development and assistance for people affected by conflicts and disasters.
He added that Kuwait would continue working with UN member states to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, promote sustainable development and strengthen international cooperation, stressing that translating these principles into action requires collective efforts to protect state sovereignty and human dignity. UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. Kuwait joined the organization on May 14, 1963, becoming its 111th member.
