How Seychelles and Russia developed half a century of educational ties
Following its independence in 1976 (50 years ago), Seychelles experienced a critical shortage of qualified local professionals to drive its development.
To address these urgent skills gaps, the island government sent students overseas for specialized training, receiving extensive support from the Soviet Union and later Russia.
According to human resource development consultant Dr. Marina Confait, approximately 300 Seychellois citizens have studied in the USSR and Russia over a 48-year period.
These professionals returned home with expertise in medicine, engineering, law, economics, and administration to build the nation's core institutions.
