JUBA, South Sudan — Three former government officials detained in May over allegations of forging President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s signature have been released following a presidential order, ending months in custody without being brought before a court, according to former Minister of Investment Dr. Dhieu Mathok.
The officials are former lawmakers Kom Kom Geng and Ayii Ayii Akol, and Achan Agoth Akiec, a former adviser to First Lady Mary Ayen Mayardit. They were arrested on May 19, 2026, and held at the National Security Service (NSS) detention facility known as the Blue House in Juba.
Their release was reported on October 2, following nearly five months in detention.
The three were accused of forging the president’s signature, unlawfully using presidential symbols of authority, smuggling documents and interfering with an ongoing financial crimes investigation involving 16 detainees, including former First Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel.
Their arrest followed a directive from President Kiir, after parliament lifted the immunity of the two lawmakers to allow their detention.
Speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony organized by their families and the Aweil community in Juba on Thursday, 15 October, 2026 following their release, Dr. Dhieu Mathok thanked President Kiir for ordering their freedom.
He also said the three were released without being produced before a court.
“Today, we have come to thank God and our president, and those working with him for releasing these people and reuniting them with their families. We also thank the president for releasing them without producing them in court,” Mathok said.
The three former officials also expressed gratitude to President Kiir for ordering their release after months in detention.
They further thanked NSS Director General Gen. Akec Tong Aleu for what they described as fair treatment during their custody at the Blue House facility.
The former detainees said they had not been mistreated while in custody and praised the security chief for their treatment.
Eye Radio attempted to contact the NSS spokesperson on Friday morning for comment on the circumstances surrounding the officials’ release and the status of the allegations against them. However, the spokesperson did not answer the calls.
It remains unclear whether the investigation into the allegations against the three officials has been concluded or whether any further legal proceedings are expected.
