Two men are facing charges after an Ontario Provincial Police investigation uncovered an online illicit drug trafficking operation on the dark web.
The investigation — led by Caledon OPP‘s Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and assisted by OPP investigators in Dufferin, Kawartha Lakes, Orillia, Northumberland and Peterborough — commenced earlier this year when detectives became aware of an online drug marketplace that police say was responsible for shipping large amounts of illicit drugs.
The investigation took a turn when officers arrested a suspect at a Canada Post outlet in Mississauga and seized a pair of packages containing illegal drugs that were ready to be shipped to addresses across Canada.
That prompted search warrants being executed at a number of residences and vehicles both inside and outside the Greater Toronto Area.
Two facing charges
During the investigation, police seized about 600 grams of suspected fentanyl, 35 grams of suspected cocaine, $40,000 in Canadian cash, numerous electronic devices and drug paraphernalia.
On Tuesday, Caledon OPP announced two arrests in connection with the case.
Jermoll Bain, 33, of Mississauga faces numerous charges, including failure to comply with a release order, possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, nine counts of opioid trafficking, cocaine trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
He appeared in court on Tuesday.
Jermaine Willis, 34, of North York also faces charges, including one count of possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000.
He is scheduled to appear in Brampton court on Oct. 29.
Anybody with information is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or leave an anonymous tip with Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
