What we know about Onyi's admission
Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa praised the actor's willingness to seek help, framing it as a milestone moment not just for Onyi, but for the broader national conversation around substance use.
"We commend Onyi for taking this bold and commendable step toward recovery. His decision to seek help is a powerful reminder that substance use disorders are preventable and treatable health conditions, and that no one should feel ashamed to ask for support," Dr. Omerikwa said.
He added that the centre's qualified staff and evidence-based approach are designed to give individuals the tools they need to rebuild their lives, saying Onyi's journey could inspire many others to take that same first step.
Jaguar, who was instrumental in arranging the admission, spoke warmly of the actor and described his recovery as a win for the entire country.
"Onyi is a brother, a friend, and a gifted artist who has brought joy to millions of Kenyans through his craft. Today, we stand with him as he begins this important journey," Jaguar said.
He also called on the public to show compassion rather than judgement towards those battling substance use disorders, pointing to stigma as one of the greatest obstacles to recovery.
Onyi himself addressed his supporters directly, expressing gratitude to both NACADA and Jaguar while pledging to give the programme everything he has.
"I want to thank NACADA for giving me this opportunity and for treating me with dignity and respect. I also want to thank Jaguar for being there for me when I needed him most. This is a new chapter in my life, and I am committed to doing the work. I want to come back stronger, healthier, and ready to entertain my fans again. To anyone out there struggling, please know that it is okay to ask for help; there is hope," Onyi said.
His admission follows NACADA's recent validation of its Community-Based Rehabilitation Guidelines, which place emphasis on community-led recovery and reducing the stigma that often keeps people from seeking treatment.
NACADA has urged Kenyans to access support through its rehabilitation centres and community programmes across the country.
