Antonio Banderas has joined Nicolas Cage to headline the fifth season of HBO's acclaimed anthology series True Detective, with production due to begin in 2027.
Cage will play Henry Logan and Banderas will take on the role of Rai García, though plot details remain under wraps. The new instalment is set in Jamaica Bay, New York, a sharp turn from the frozen Alaska backdrop of 2024's Night Country.
Showrunner Issa López, who oversaw that fourth season, returns as writer, director and executive producer. She has hinted at "important connections" to the Alaska story while stressing it is "a new story, new characters, everything". Cage, Banderas, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and series creator Nic Pizzolatto are among the executive producers.
Cage confirmed his involvement at New York Comic-Con, more than a year after talks were first reported. The role marks only his second lead on television, following the superhero drama Spider-Noir. Banderas arrives off recent turns in Babygirl and the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony.
Night Country was the franchise's most-watched season, drawing 12.7 million viewers across platforms.
