Lufthansa is expanding its US network for summer 2027, announcing nonstop flights between
Munich Airport (MUC) and
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) just one day after revealing a new
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) – Columbus International Airport (CMH) route. However, unlike the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner selected for Columbus, Lufthansa will operate the new Phoenix service with the Airbus A350-900. According to the Lufthansa Group's summer 2027 schedule announcement, flights to Arizona will begin next summer, operating three times per week.
The expansion is part of Lufthansa Group's most extensive network growth program since 2020, adding ten new intercontinental routes and more frequencies across its airlines. Phoenix will become a new destination in Lufthansa's network from its Munich hub, adding another transatlantic option for passengers traveling between Germany and the American Southwest. The announcement shows two new US destinations in consecutive days.
Lufthansa's Munich–Phoenix Route Takes Off In August 2027
Lufthansa will launch its new nonstop service between Munich and Phoenix on August 3, 2027. The route will operate three times per week, with departures scheduled for Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The Airbus A350-900 will operate the service, while the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is assigned to the recently announced Frankfurt–Columbus flights.
The new connection will give passengers a direct link between Lufthansa's Bavarian hub and Arizona's largest city, eliminating the need to connect through another airport when traveling between the two destinations. According to One Mile at a Time, the route covers approximately 5,823 miles (9,371 kilometers) in each direction. This new service represents the first regularly scheduled nonstop connection between Phoenix and a Lufthansa Group hub in the carrier group's current network.
Lufthansa's announcement describes Arizona's state capital as one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States. The new route will serve both leisure travelers interested in the American Southwest and passengers visiting the region for business. Three weekly departures will give the airline a starting point to assess demand before any potential future frequency changes.
Phoenix Strengthens Its Transatlantic Connections
Phoenix is an important hub for
American Airlines, offering extensive connections across the United States. However, its nonstop links with Europe have historically been more limited than those of major coastal gateways. As One Mile at a Time explains,
British Airways and American Airlines already serve
London Heathrow Airport (LHR), while
Air France introduced a
Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) connection in 2024. Lufthansa's arrival will add another European gateway to the airport's long-haul network.
The route also expands
Star Alliance's presence in the Phoenix market. Lufthansa passengers will be able to connect through Munich to destinations across Europe and beyond, while travelers originating in Germany and other European countries gain a more convenient way to reach Arizona. The commercial success of the service will depend partly on connecting traffic, alongside passengers traveling specifically between Munich and Phoenix.
Phoenix has previously had transatlantic service from German carriers. For example, Condor operated flights between Germany and Phoenix before discontinuing the route in 2025. Lufthansa's new service consequently represents a fresh opportunity to establish a sustainable nonstop connection between the region and one of Europe's major aviation hubs.
A Wider Lufthansa Network Expansion
The Phoenix announcement is part of a broader expansion across the Lufthansa Group's network for summer 2027. Its official schedule announcement outlines ten new intercontinental connections, alongside additional frequencies on existing services. Other developments include Lufthansa's Frankfurt–Columbus route, Discover Airlines' new Frankfurt– Edmonton International Airport (YEG) service, and ITA Airways' planned Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)– Caracas Airport (CCS) connection.
The choice of aircraft for the two new American destinations is particularly noteworthy. Columbus will receive the Boeing 787-9 with Lufthansa's Allegris cabin configuration, while Phoenix will be served by the traveler’s favorite Airbus A350-900. Both are modern long-haul aircraft, but their deployment reflects Lufthansa's broader fleet-planning decisions rather than a single-aircraft strategy for new US routes.
With Phoenix scheduled to launch next summer, Lufthansa will have another opportunity to strengthen its position in the transatlantic market. For passengers, the most immediate benefit is a new nonstop option connecting Arizona with Munich, alongside additional onward connections through Lufthansa's European network, especially noteworthy after the Condor’s departure from Phoenix.
